The gospel this coming Sunday is a harsh parable about forgiveness. Yet even if we feel condemned by this reading, we receive God’s mercy at the table of the Lord. Come to worship, to be forgiven, and to be empowered to forgive others.

Historians tell us that a right-handed shake originated centuries ago, when showing your empty hand to the person you were approaching indicated that you were not brandishing a weapon.

When church people refer to “Matthew 18,” it is the gospel for this coming Sunday that they are thinking of, with its advice about how Christians are to deal with controversies within the believing community. The good news in the reading is especially the last line: that Christ is among us always. Come to receive Christ’s gift of himself in word, sacrament, and community.

This photo seems dated: the altar is against the wall, and the pastor is distributing wafers. But note on the church’s front wall the Tree of Life banner, on which the fruits of the Spirit grow from the cross of Christ’s forgiveness.

In this gospel reading this coming Sunday, we hear that Peter received the “keys of the kingdom.” In our baptism, it is as if we too have received keys that open God to us and open ourselves to others. Come to worship; be opened to the word and at the table.

In 1482, the Italian artist Pietro Perugino painted Christ Handing the Keys to St. Peter. In accord with tradition, Peter is pictured with a bald head and white beard. The painting sets the scene in front of a historic baptistery so that we connect baptism with the kingdom promised by Christ.

In the gospel reading for this coming Sunday, a foreign woman argues her case before Jesus, but in the end she is blessed. Come to hear this interesting story, and join us for mercy at the Master’s table.

In medieval fashion, the single-page illustration in Les Très Riches Heures du Duc de Berry, the 1415 Book of Hours of John, Duke of Berry, shows several parts of the story. The daughter is home, sick in bed; Jesus is not heeding the woman’s plea; and finally, Jesus is blessing the woman for her faith.
