Climate disasters are only getting worse and more frequent. Creating hubs of climate resilience is a critical way our congregations can keep our communities safe.

UUs everywhere are rising to the challenge. As part of our Climate Resilience Peer Learning Circle, ten UUs collaboratively explored possibilities for creating hubs that center love & prioritize justice.

These days, Unitarian Universalists and people of faith and conscience across faith traditions are increasingly called to respond to authoritarian violence with care, community support, and strategic coordination. Each time UUs come together in this work, we strengthen our commitment to our deeply held religious values and our organizing power to build the essential infrastructure for justice movements, including love, imagination, collaboration, and cooperation.

UU the Vote Solidarity Summits will continue that practice through regional interfaith justice training and practice gatherings. Side With Love is coordinating these events across the U.S. and there are resources and opportunities for groups to develop their own events as well. UU congregations are encouraged to get involved as we move together toward another election season committed to justice, equity, pluralism, and the protection of our democratic institutions.

Join the Haitian community on Thursday, Sep 3rd, 2026, at 7:00 p.m. ET for a national prayer service in honor of Pierre Damas Bel. (Link to register to join is in comments.)

Pierre Damas Bel had just started his freshman year at Wright State University on August 24, chasing a dream of studying medicine. He graduated from Springfield High School this spring as an honors student, a JROTC member, and a varsity soccer player — the kind of young man this community was proud to call its own.

Then, on Monday, his family lost him.

Pierre's family and Haitian leaders here in Springfield believe he took his own life after months of mounting distress.

In June, the Supreme Court allowed the Trump administration to strip Temporary Protected Status from Haitian immigrants across the country, and Pierre was among the hundreds of thousands who lost that protection.

In July, immigration authorities summoned him to their offices and placed a GPS monitor on his ankle. He wrote online about walking through his own life carrying a feeling of shame and humiliation he never imagined he'd experience. His father says Pierre went back to ICE twice, asking simply to have it removed so he could return to playing the sport he loved.

This is the weight so many families in our community are carrying right now — not as an abstract policy, but as a daily fear that follows their children to school, to practice, to the dinner table. We owe Pierre, and every family living under this same pressure, our public witness and our care.

Beloveds, if you are able, I hope you will watch this Sunday as NASA launches their Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope, designed to explore some of the universe’s biggest mysteries, including dark energy.

The telescope is named for lifelong and devoted Unitarian and later Unitarian Universalist, who was also NASA’s first chief astronomer, Nancy Grace Roman. A longtime member of the River Road Unitarian Universalist Congregation RRUUC in Bethesda, MD, Roman was as committed to serving her community, especially around issues of poverty and food insecurity, as she was to fearlessly advancing science in her role at NASA.

The UUA has signed on to a letter calling for the termination of all deportation proceedings against Mohsen Mahdawi, a lawful permanent US resident, Columbia University student, and Palestinian human rights activist.

Mohsen’s spiritual practices of Unitarian Universalism and Buddhism inform and are informed by his championing of human rights through active organizing, peace building, and policy reform.

The deportation proceedings against Mohsen aim to punish him for speaking out against the genocide in Palestine. His case is a clear example of the United States government violating the principles of free speech that are enshrined in the American democratic tradition and the Constitution.

As Unitarian Universalists, our foundational commitments rest upon values of pluralism, justice, inquiry and debate, and democratic freedom of expression for all people.

We lift up the call for the end of legal and political proceedings against Mohsen Mahdawi and stand with the Palestinian people in their struggle for peace, justice, and freedom.

Beloveds, Unitarian Universalism is a tradition that brings the best of human care and goodness into the world. As we enter into another congregational year, with a world full of heartbreak and struggle, I remain grateful to be living into our shared values together with you. This year, my hope for us is that we continue to embrace a deep commitment to build for the future and for generations to come.

Here at the UUA, we rely on our relationships with you, and on your continued support, to elevate congregational life and advance our UU values in the world. Engaging with our programs is an important way to support our relational commitments with one another and there are some really wonderful, fresh offerings coming out this fall.

On behalf of our entire Unitarian Universalist Association, I bring you love and blessings as we move into this new congregational year.
