He knew he should bury his mother instead of the other way around, but it wasn’t going to be that way! He was dying, and he knew it. He was in so much pain. No one could prepare him for this! It was excruciating, more than anyone should have to endure! Even then, his thoughts, were more about her and others than himself. For three years he had poured himself into their lives, and more than anything else, he wanted to leave them some instructions on what to do now. Then there was his mother. He wouldn’t be there, so he would leave a trusted friend in charge. Oh Lord, even then You cared about Your mother in those last few moments on the cross (John 19:26-27). Here in Your presence this morning, Lord, give us eyes to see the needs all around us. People who are suffering need someone to care. Help us to care about them more than our own needs. Today we pray for those who are suffering. Here let our focus shift from our needs to theirs, and may we learn to pray as we ought. As we come near You we become more like You. Our self-centeredness fades, and we care more for others. Let us be selfless, Lord, self-centered no more.

The hands on the clock seemed to creep forward. Still she stayed by her baby. Her husband thought it was a financial trap, but there had to be a reason for the temperature. The test for spinal meningitis had been positive, and now her baby cried whenever a nurse came in wearing a white uniform. Usually it meant another shot. It was either the shots or taking away the mobility of a ten-month-old with a surgical incision. At night she crawled up into the big steel baby bed and slept near him. She sang to him again, ever so softly, "Jesus, name above all names, beautiful Savior, glorious Lord; Emmanuel, blessed Redeemer, Living Word!" Her baby was seriously sick, quarantined because meningitis was highly contagious. Every visitor washed, was gowned and masked. Over and over she sang, and the sweet song comforted her baby boy. Oh Lord, she is so much like You, singing over her child the way You sing over us (Zephaniah 3:17). How awesome is this, to know that You love us so much that You "rejoice over us with singing!" Here in Your presence may we hear the sound of Your voice. Whatever we face and whatever the day may bring, may we find comfort in Your song. What a wonderful song we hear You sing, the sweet sound of the Savior's Song!

She had that "type A" kind of personality. I don't think she ever relaxed much. She was the pastor's wife, and lived in the "parsonage." It was her home, but then I guess it was kind of like having several dozen landlords! She rose to the part so well that even her kids didn’t really ever understand all she did until after they were grown and left home. Well her "type A" personality rose so well to the occasion that she was "ready for inspection" most anytime. How she ever accomplished it all, with their dad and four spoiled sons, is an amazement to this day. She is always missed, on Mother's Day even more. At times she lived up to the tittle, “Sergeant Mom." Somebody had to take charge and organize this ragtag bunch of guys, and she did it so well. We are just beginning to understand how she was able to do all she did. Yes Lord, she knew that Your mercies are new every morning. Many mornings would find her on the sofa reading Your Word, or praying with her Bible open. She knew, Lord, where real strength comes from, and she found it daily in Your presence. Oh may we find that same strength! Let us do more this week than just prepare for Mother's Day. Let us find You here and know that we are ready for whatever the day brings because of Your presence. May we learn from the example of “Sergeant Mom.”

It was so surreal! Hearing those words from her doctor was like having a bad dream. Only it was one from which she did not wake up! She didn’t believe it. At least she didn’t want to. It was something that always happened to someone else. Now she learns it is growing fast, and that it is the worst possible kind! The doctors don’t mince words. "It will get worse." They said. She is given just a few months to live. Oh Lord, we pray today for the hopeless. Give them hope today. What an encouragement to hear the testimony, healed and cancer free after radical surgery with pancreatic cancer, of all things! Another is diagnosed with stage 4 cancer of the pancreas! She finds hope, goes through all the treatments, and against all odds is finally cancer free! We rejoice with them this morning, Lord, and pray for others, who have been battling for sometime now. Please, Lord, deliver us from fear, and fill us with hope. Encourage us with Your awesome presence. Maybe there won't be an angelic manifestation. Perhaps for some there is just the awesome awareness of Your powerful presence as they are still before You. However You choose to work in our lives, Lord, we pray that You will fill Your people with hope. May we share Your hope with the hopeless, so that they too may find hope again.

He read all the cards in the rack. Nothing was quite right. They might have been fine for someone else, and some of them were nice enough but all of them came up short. Well this year, the one he had chosen would have to do. Today, marked 49 years of marriage, and he wanted to find the right words to express what was in his heart. He bought the flowers, chose some candy, and hurried home. He had spent much longer reading cards than he had planned. Oh Lord, sometimes words are just not enough. So often we must pray with "groanings that can't be uttered (Romans 8:26)." We often find that language fails us when we want to express our love for You. When we finally find the words, and make our bold declaration of love, we discover that declaring our love is not enough. You are calling us to show our love for You. If we love You, we will do something (John 14:15)! Today, we thank You for 49 years of Your love demonstrated in her faithfulness, but even more we thank You for multiplied years of Your faithful love to us, demonstrated daily by Your grace and mercy. May Your awesome love be manifest through us as we give that grace and mercy to others. We are such grateful recipients of Your unfailing love.

He was going to do better this week. It stretched out before him, and right now it looked possible. There was one thing that was sure. He couldn’t do it on his own. He had only proven one thing, that he was good at failing. Every week it was the same. Lord, this week, we come into Your presence and find the strength we need for today. We are so aware of the privilege You have provided by Your mercy and grace. Because Your body was broken for us, and Your blood was shed for us, we have forgiveness and access to You! We can come into Your very presence, a place reserved only for the high priest, only once a year. Now, we can come everyday and as often as we like, to experience daily the glory of Your presence. By this same access You make us holy! Oh Lord, how we treasure that holiness! It is what we need, and what we long for. It is, Lord, what You want for us. May we live today as Your people, those who treasure the precious gift of holiness that You not only provided at the cross but also renew in us daily. By your grace and mercy may we do more than better this week! May we do awesome for your glory!

She had been here before, overwhelmed with stress. So very much was expected of her, and she really did want to live up to all those expectations. It was all good, but there were just so many hours in a day! There was just no way, and she had come to the end of herself. Lord, that is so often where we find You, there at the end of ourselves. When we finally run out of our own strength, we discover Your unlimited resources. Today, we lay ourselves at Your feet in our weakness, and here we find Your power. You lift us up, today, to that place in Your presence where we are renewed by the power of Your Spirit. Yes, Lord, Your grace is always enough (2 Corinthians 12:9). Your power is made perfect in our weakness as we put our faith and trust in You with Your unlimited resources.
