Courage and confidence are cultivated.

That is one of the big reminders in this clip. David’s courage did not come from personality alone or from natural strength. It was cultivated through a lifetime relationship with the Lord.

If we want to become people of courage and confidence, then we have to do what David did: cultivate our relationship with God.

And the good news is that we have even more resources than David had, because in Christ we have every reason to know the Lord, trust him, and walk with him faithfully.

One of the hardest things for us to grasp is that our relationship with God is not built on finally making ourselves lovable.

God did not wait for you to get yourself together before he loved you.

He loved you when you were weak. He loved you when you were ashamed. He loved you when you were unlovable.

And that same love is what continues to carry you forward today. The Christian life is not propelled by proving ourselves to God, but by resting in the love he has already shown us in Christ.

Chesed is a Hebrew word often translated as kindness, steadfast love, or covenant love.

But it is not merely a warm feeling. It is the love of someone who has bound himself by promise and says, “I will keep my word.”

That is why David’s kindness matters. When David shows kindness for Jonathan’s sake, we are meant to remember the covenant he made with Jonathan.

And through that, we get a glimpse of God’s own covenant love — his steadfast, promise-keeping kindness toward his people.

Christians are called to respond to God’s authority with humble submission.

In the clip, we are reminded that God is sovereign, and his plan is sovereign. David’s response to God teaches us what it looks like to come before the Lord and say, “You are King, your plan is King, and I submit myself to your sovereignty.”

We often want God’s work in our lives to feel like an airport escalator — something that moves us quickly and effortlessly toward the place we want to go.

But grace does not always take us there that way.

God’s grace teaches us to walk with him. It slows us down, forms us, and reminds us that the goal is not simply to build quickly or perform well. The goal is to build according to God’s vision, resting in his grace.

We spend so much of life wondering how everything will work out.

Where will I go? Who will I marry? What job will I take? Will I have kids? Who will my friends be? What will my future look like?

The truth is, we cannot move all the pieces on the board. We cannot orchestrate everything that lies ahead.

But we can rest in the God who has already been faithful. His faithfulness in the past gives us hope for the future, because the same God who has carried us this far will not fail to carry us forward.

David’s life took what we might call the shape of a J-curve.

He went down into the depths of grief before he journeyed up into the heights of glory.

We see that same pattern in the life of Jesus. He descended into the sin and misery of our lives on his path to glory.

And for those who belong to Christ, God often leads us along that same kind of path. We may descend into grief, adversity, trials, and tribulations — but those things are not meaningless. They are part of the path God uses to take his people to glory.

Grief will not have the last word.

The good news of the gospel is that Jesus descended into the sin, misery, and grief of this life. He remained faithful even to the point of death, and he ascended to heaven so that all of God’s promises are true for his people.

That means we can strive to remain faithful. We can trust God’s promises. We can listen to the encouragement of James 1:12: the one who remains steadfast under trial will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him.

Living as sojourners on the earth does not mean we escape, withdraw, or refuse to engage with the world around us.

It means the opposite.

Because this world is not our ultimate home, we are freed to love sacrificially, serve faithfully, and seek the welfare of the place where God has put us.

That is the calling of God’s people: to live with hope, repentance, confession, and love while we wait for our eternal home.
