This Sunday is the annual celebration of Pentecost. It is a day to remember the birth of the Church. Even more, it is a day to remember how God's Holy Spirit is poured out on people, empowering them to do things they didn't think they could do. That same Holy Spirit continues to fill all kinds of people in amazing ways. What Spirit-fueled gifts have you been given? How do they animate your life? What happens when together we allow the Holy Spirit to guide our church?

This Sunday is the last in our Easter season worship series called "New Life, Bold Life." In Acts chapter 1, the risen Jesus tells the disciples that they will be his witnesses on earth. And yet moments later they are gazing up into the sky trying to see where Jesus has gone. Fortunately, divine messengers redirect their gaze back to earth. What is the balance between spiritual concerns and the basic needs of every day life? Are followers of Jesus supposed to be saving souls or serving the practical needs of people? Is there even a difference between the two? How do Easter people, empowered by the risen Jesus, put their faith into action?

This Sunday, as we continue our Easter season worship series called "New Life, Bold Life," we will hear the story about Paul in Athens. While in the city, he notices how many different gods the Athenians worship, including an altar to "an unknown god." Paul recognizes the genuine spiritual curiosity of the Athenians. And he also sees an opportunity to share with them the one who has changed his life -- the risen Christ. This story invites us to reflect on what we worship and what other gods we bow down to. And through this story, Paul invites us to remember that, as Easter people, we worship a living God who gives us new life. How can our worship of this God change our lives?
