Olivet Lutheran Church of Sylvania

Olivet Lutheran Church of Sylvania Olivet’s vision: “Celebrating the power of the Holy Spirit by inviting all people to become devoted followers of Jesus”. It first met in a room above a store.

We are a dynamic and forward looking community of faith that celebrates God’s grace and engages with the worlds needs. Olivet Lutheran was founded April 26, 1914. It's first building was on the corner of Whiteford and Alexis in Sylvania, OH. For almost 110 years God has called us to be disciples of Christ in the community in which we serve. We offer a rich array of opportunities for ministry with

our congregational, community, and global perspectives. We welcome the faithful vision of our members for how we might bless the world. We have regular Sunday services at 9:00 am and 11:00 am. We have Bible study opportunities. Our website address is www.olivetsylvania.org

𝗙𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗺 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗮𝗹 𝗘𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗘𝘅𝗰𝗲𝗲𝗱𝘀 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀! 🕊️🛠️

On Saturday, June 13, Monroe Street United Methodist Church hosted a community Firearm Disposal Event that far exceeded everyone's projections!

𝑯𝒆𝒓𝒆 𝒊𝒔 𝒂 𝒍𝒐𝒐𝒌 𝒂𝒕 𝒘𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒘𝒆 𝒂𝒄𝒉𝒊𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒅 𝒕𝒐𝒈𝒆𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒓 𝒅𝒖𝒓𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒇𝒐𝒖𝒓-𝒉𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒏𝒕:

▪️107 fi****ms were safely removed from circulation (more than double what we projected!).

▪️60+ vehicles were shepherded through the drive-through disposal process.

▪️50+ volunteers braved a very hot, sunny day—including 12 from Olivet alongside volunteers from eight other Toledo-area faith communities.

𝗦𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 & 𝗣𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗲
Our volunteers heard powerful, moving stories from participants. Some shared that the surrendered fi****ms had been used by an adult child to die by su***de, and seeing them destroyed finally brought a sense of closure. Others, including widows, turned in inherited fi****ms they discovered were still loaded.

𝗧𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗱𝘀 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝗣𝗹𝗼𝘄𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗲𝘀
In a beautiful witness of faith, gun parts were set aside to create works of art. Two pastors operated mobile forges and anvils, literally transforming gun parts into garden tools to act out Isaiah’s vision of “beating swords into plowshares” (Isaiah 2:4).

𝗢𝘂𝗿 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆’𝘀 𝗚𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆
Olivet was proud to be a lead sponsor alongside Trinity Episcopal Church, Toledo Mennonite Church, and Salem Lutheran Church, with Monroe Street UMC graciously hosting.

𝑾𝒆 𝒂𝒓𝒆 𝒊𝒏𝒄𝒓𝒆𝒅𝒊𝒃𝒍𝒚 𝒈𝒓𝒂𝒕𝒆𝒇𝒖𝒍 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝒄𝒐𝒏𝒈𝒓𝒆𝒈𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏'𝒔 𝒈𝒆𝒏𝒆𝒓𝒐𝒔𝒊𝒕𝒚:

▪️Over $600 was contributed following April worship services.

▪️Three anonymous Olivet donors stepped forward during the event to provide an additional $1,200 for gift cards, allowing organizers to continue serving participants late into the afternoon.

Thank you to everyone who volunteered, donated, prayed, and helped spread the word. Together, we helped make our community safer and offered hope, healing, and a tangible expression of God's vision for peace. ❤️👇

Dear People of Olivet:

The Old West End is a neighborhood of porches: places of welcome where strangers become friends.

When I arrived in Toledo as a newly ordained pastor nearly 20 years ago, the Old West End held me with generous intention and expansive love. Such richness of community draws people together to build distinct neighborhoods—and this creative commitment to expressive love is exactly what is celebrated at a yearly festival the first weekend every June in Toledo.

I lament conflicts that are not resolved with respect.

I lament inequities that cause despair and desperation.

I lament violence that denudes people of human dignity.

Under the leadership of Mr. Mike Linehan (Olivet Lutheran Church) and Rev. Meribah Mansfield (Trinity Episcopal Church), the Multifaith Coalition to Reduce Gun Violence has—for nearly two years—been preparing an Unwanted Fi****ms Disposal Event. Sisters 4 Unity and Moms Demand Action will partner in the event this Saturday, June 13. Disposing of unwanted fi****ms is one piece in a patchwork of responses to reduce gun violence. Glenwood Lutheran Church is a host site for “Stop the Bleed” training events to reduce trauma-related deaths, including those caused by gun violence. Malcolm Cunningham directs the Mayor’s Office of Neighborhood Safety and Engagement (MONSE) employing Violence Interruption, a Community Action Table, and Trauma and Survivor Services to address the root causes of gun violence and improve public safety.

What is your part in this faith-filled work?

Pastor Melissa
