Normally when we think of God working in the Old Testament we think of miracle events like the crossing of the Red Sea or the walls of Jericho falling down. But when you read Ezra, Nehemiah and Esther (all books that take place after the Jews are exiled) you don’t find one single miracle in any of them. And yet you can see God’s “great power and strong hand” at work in all three of these books. Our focus is on Nehemiah and this week we will see God’s great power and strong hand granting success and mercy in the sight of the king. This Sunday we will see what it looks like to trust the Builder. With Nehemiah we learn that trusting the Builder takes courage, involves preparation, and requires faith. But we will also see that we can trust the Builder for He is good.

This Sunday we start our summer preaching series through the book of Nehemiah. What's usually the first thing we think of when we hear the story of Nehemiah? Rebuilding the wall. But if you look a little closer at this book you'll see that this is a story about a wall that is much more than just about a wall. You will see that the wall was part of God's greater purposes. You will see that what needed to be rebuilt was not a structure, but a people. The spiritual rebuilding of God's people was the most important work; the wall helped contribute to that work but it was not the end goal. This summer as we look at what happened during the book of Nehemiah we will see that God is constantly rebuilding His people to accomplish His purposes. We will learn together what this means for us at Emmanuel, what it means to be rebuilt.

Good news is something we all love to share. No one has ever had a difficult time wanting to share good news. We don't need to be guilt tripped into sharing the good news of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Deep down we believe the news is good and we also believe it's worth sharing. We need a more compelling reason than guilt to share the Gospel. This Sunday we will discover that a more compelling reason is found in what happened on the Day of Pentecost. As we look at the significance of that day we will find our compelling reason for sharing the Gospel.
