✨ A Sacred Evening of Celebration and Reflection ✨

What a meaningful Shabbat service we shared! We began our evening celebrating a truly special moment—the Jewish conversion ceremony of Sharon Candelise. Mazel Tov, Sharon! We are overjoyed to welcome you and celebrate this milestone together as a community. 🕯️✡️

Following the ceremony, we stepped into our Shabbat service, where the sermon explored Parashat Nitzavim and the profound concept of "standing":
📖 "You Stand This Day Before Your God":
The Torah describes the entire community—tribal heads, officials, elders, and families alike—standing together to renew the covenant.
Standing is more than just an upright posture; it is an active choice to embrace shared responsibility.

🤝 Community Over Individualism:
While modern culture often frames religion as a matter of personal preference, our tradition reminds us that being part of a covenant is about something greater: choosing goodness, holiness, and standing up for one another as a collective whole.

✨ Owning Our Journey:
Though we live in a world that deeply values autonomy, we each hold a sacred place within this ongoing story. There isn't just one single answer or path—what matters is choosing to show up and stand for what is good.

As the High Holy Days approach, join the Temple Beth Shalom Social Action Committee in making a difference!

Every Wednesday this season, bring non-perishable items to the temple lobby for our annual High Holy Days Food Drive. Every canned and boxed good collected goes directly to support the Valley View Food Bank.

🕯️ Reflections on Last Night’s Lay-Led Shabbat Service 🕯️

Last night was a meaningful evening at Temple Beth Shalom of the West Valley. As the final Shabbat in Rabbi Dana Kaplan's absence, our community came together for an inspiring service lay-led by Mariane Anderson. Mariane guided us through the 49th Torah portion, (Deuteronomy 21:10–25:19). Containing 74 of the 613 commandments.
Her sermon challenged us to look beyond passive giving and reflect on our social and community duties:

🫶 Taking Care of Each Other: Helping within our immediate temple family is essential, but how do we extend that care to the broader population?

💙Action Over Passivity: Whether donating to food banks, giving blood, or delivering meals—is it enough? The age of passive giving is over.

🌎 Tikkun Olam (Repairing the World): We are called to find creative, personal pathways to fulfill our social contract with God and actively make the world a better place for ourselves, our loved ones, and our neighbors.

🎂 Community Celebrations: We also wished a very Happy Birthday to Steve Hechler! 🥂

🎫 Non-Member Tickets: $250 per person (covers all services; partial tickets are not available).

⚠️ Payment Deadline: Payment for non-member tickets must be received by the Temple by noon on Thursday, Sept. 10. Payments cannot be made at the door.

Reflections from Last Night's Shabbat Service 🕯️✨

We had a meaningful and inspiring Shabbat evening together at Temple Beth Shalom!

Nan Rubin-Lieber led our service with warmth and wisdom, joined by Cantor Baruch, whom we were thrilled to welcome back.

Service Highlights & Sermon Takeaways:

🎶 Original Song on Justice: Cantor Baruch moved us with a special original song based on Parashat Shoftim, focusing on the powerful mandate: "Justice, justice shall you pursue."

📜 Nan’s Sermon: Nan explored the laws of kings, emphasizing that even a ruler is not above the law. In ancient times, requiring leaders to follow the Torah and comply with community values, setting an early precedent for democracy, constitutional limits, and safeguards against the abuse of power.

Thank you to everyone who joined us in person and in spirit for an uplifting evening of prayer, song, and community.

🎶 | Welcoming Back Cantor Baruch Koritan! 🎶

We are so excited to share that Cantor Baruch Koritan will be returning to the bimah tomorrow night for Shabbat services! 🕯️✨

For over 34 years, Cantor Baruch has brought warmth, inspiration, and incredible music to Temple Beth Shalom of the West Valley. From his early singing days at Workman Circle schools to composing liturgical settings performed around the globe—and even releasing his CD “Shalom to You” (where he played piano as a former Liberace Piano Competition runner-up!)—his musical journey and devotion to our community are truly one of a kind. 🎹🎸✨

We can’t wait to hear his voice fill our sanctuary once again tomorrow evening.
