in 1954, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in Brown v. Board of Education that school segregation violated the 14th Amendment.

The decision was shaped in part by South Carolina’s Briggs v. Elliott—one of the first cases in the nation to directly challenge segregated schools. When consolidated into Brown, the Court unanimously declared that “separate but equal” had no place in public education.

Explore Briggs v. Elliott: From Clarendon County to the Supreme Court, our digital exhibit featuring films, oral histories, photographs, and court records. The site highlights the case’s lasting impact, as well as the individuals and community members whose efforts helped move it forward.
