Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, 8092 3rd Street, Stonewood, WV (2026)

If only one priest deserves credit for preserving the faith of this community, that man would be Fr. He realized it was essential to build a Church within the community where the people could attend Mass without difficulty. Bridget’s’ was completed in 1927 with most of the building work being done by the parishioners. It was a mission church staffed by priest from St. Johns Church in Clarksburg. W

ith the help of a sizable gift from an Irish lady by the name of Bridget Hayden and strenuous efforts at fund raising, the Church was finally free of debt. In 1955 with the help of parish volunteers, a residence for a priest was built, and St. Bridget’s’ was declared an independent Parish, taking in the area of Stonewood, Nutter Fort and out-lying districts. O’Donovan was appointed as Pastor of the Parish. By this time it was evident that some type of expansion was required. A decision was reached to build a larger Church. Actual construction began in August 1965, on the softball field that had previously been obtained by the Men’s’ Club under the direction and encouragement of Fr. John O’Reilly in the 40’s. The Church was named Our Lady of Perpetual Help. The Holy Sacrifice of the Mass was offered for the first time on May 15, 1966. The Church is built to the honor and glory of God wherein His people may worship Him. Let our people always remember that this beautiful edifice is not only a measure of their love of God, but a place wherein they give true expression to that love. In 1978, the Franciscan Friars, T.O.R. (Third Order Regular) began to minster at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish. By this time parish members had increased to nearly 400 families. Thanks to the hard work and generous efforts of our parishioners, the debt on the Church was completely paid and the mortgage burned in December of 1981. This cleared the way for the beginning of the next dream of our community. Since the opening of the New Church building, old St. Bridget’s’ had been used as a social hall and a few basement classrooms provided space3 for religious education. By this time, old St. Bridget’s’ had begun to deteriorate and space was inadequate for the number of families registered. After a survey of needs and careful planning, construction on a multipurpose building began in the spring of 1982. April 27, 1983 brought the dedication of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish Center. This facility contains a modular social hall, large institutional kitchen, classrooms, and a chapel. Also there is a large exterior patio for open-air gatherings. The Center is designed to meet a variety of needs with flexibility to accommodate various group sizes. Our daily Chapel is open for your visits. It is a quiet place to come and pray. With the help of God, much has been accomplished by the generations of this Catholic Community.

Mark Bronson Obituary

Mark Joseph Bronson, 62, of Clarksburg, passed away on Sunday, August 16, 2026, at his residence, surrounded by his loving family.

He was born on October 22, 1963, in Pasadena, California, the son of the late Walter J. Bronson and Jean Ann Roden Bronson.

Mark graduated from Rosemead High School in Rosemead, California, and later attended Cal Poly State University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in Agricultural Technology. He proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps from 1988 to 1996 and later went on to get his master’s degree in Nursing from Pacific Lutheran University.

Following his military service, Mark worked as a Hazardous Materials Coordinator for the State of Washington. He and his wife moved to West Virginia to work on his PhD, where he also started his nursing career. Mark devoted himself to caring for others. He worked at Highland Hospital in Clarksburg, Amedisys Hospice, the West Virginia Veterans Nursing Facility, and United Hospital Center until his illness prevented him from continuing his work.

Mark was an Eagle Scout, a member of the Knights of Columbus, the American Psychiatric Association, the Hospice and Palliative Nurses Association, and Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing. He was also a devoted member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Stonewood.

In his free time, Mark enjoyed gardening and took particular pleasure in growing both flowers and vegetables. Above all, he cherished his family and the time he was able to spend with those he loved.

Mark is survived by his wife, Theresa Cottrill Bronson, whom he married on June 20, 1992; two children, Thea M. Wills and husband Sean, and Mark Joseph Bronson Jr.; two grandchildren, Audrey and Wynne; six siblings, Karen Bronson, Tim Bronson and wife Cindy, Paula Gomez and husband Tom, Pat Bronson and wife Hope, Tricia Bronson, and Greg Bronson and wife Sarina; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.

In addition to his parents, Mark was preceded in death by his uncles, Paul Roden and George Bronson; and his aunts, Signe Roden, Mary Lou Bronson, and Kathryn Roden.

Family and friends will be received at Davis Funeral Home, 124 Olen Thomas Drive, Route 98, Clarksburg, on Thursday, August 20, 2026 at 3:00 p.m. with full military honors accorded by the Harrison County Honor Guard and the United States Marine Corps Honor Guard. Visitation will continue until 7:00 p.m., when a Vigil Service will conclude the evening.

A Catholic Funeral Liturgy will be celebrated on Friday, August 21, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church on Cost Avenue in Stonewood, with Father Kumar Reddimasu as celebrant. Cremation will follow the Service. Due to allergies, the family requests no flowers. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, 8092 Third Street, Stonewood, WV 26301. Assumption of Mary - Saturday August 15

Since the Solemnity falls on a Saturday this year it is NOT a Holy Day of Obligation. However, we will be having a special mass at 9:00 a.m. Saturday morning in the Church for all who want to give honor to Mary on this special Feast Day.

Note: attending this special mass does not fulfill your Sunday obligation.

Journey in The Shadow of St. James

July 25 is the Feast Day of St. James the Greater.

It was James and his brother John that were out fishing when Jesus appeared to them, and they left their livelihood to follow him.

James, John, and Peter were particularly close to Christ. James was present at the Transfiguration and in the Garden of Gethsemane. “The greater” distinguishes him from the other Apostle James, “the lesser,” who was younger.

James is believed to have been the first of the Apostles to be martyred.

There is an infamous hike through Europe that is called the Camino de Santiago or the Way of St. James. The journey has several routes but all lead to the shrine of St. James the Apostle in the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in Spain. The original hike is 500 miles through Northern Spain. The pilgrimage has been taken by countless people since Christianity began.

The journey takes about 30 days. However, there are various routes through Europe pilgrims can take that are as short at 100 km (62 miles).

Many who complete the journey say they feel as if they were walking in the shadow of Saint James.

Before he was killed in Jerusalem by order of Herod Agrippa about 44 AD, James the Greater is believed to have been preaching and evangelizing in Spain.
