Why We Hesitate to Trust

LUKE 5:1-11

Today's passage takes place on the Sea of Galilee after the optimal time of the day for fishing has passed. The fishermen are cleaning their nets along the shore. But at Jesus' request, one lowers his into the water. All of Peter's expertise tells him that fishing at such an hour will be useless, but he does what Jesus asked. And the reward for his trust is a record-breaking (and net-breaking) catch.

As believers, we want to be like the disciple, overcoming our doubts and courageously following God. But sometimes, if what He's asking of us seems unreasonable, we might rely on human logic to decide whether to trust Him. There could also be a tendency to hesitate in situations for which our knowledge or experience seems to contradict His plan.

There is a time for seeking knowledge and godly counsel, but when the Lord makes His will clear, we are meant to act (Ps. 119:60). No opinion matters except that of the Lord, who promises to always be working for our good (Rom. 8:28)—and who never makes mistakes.
The next time you find yourself doubting, think about what is causing you to hesitate. Then you can pray specifically to overcome the faith hurdle, knowing that God blesses the steps we take to follow Him.

Building a Firm Foundation

LAMENTATIONS 3:21-23

Our faith isn't built on feelings or wishful thinking—it rests on something far more solid. Let's look at seven foundational aspects of Christianity:
1. God is. Faith must be built on the simple confession that the Lord is—He is real. He exists and is indeed God (Heb. 11:6).
2. God is love. He's intimately concerned with your life and wants to engage in a relationship with you.
3. God is just. His justice is absolutely perfect—even when He lovingly disciplines us.
4. God is all-knowing. He knows your heart, your pain, and your questions. You cannot shock or surprise Him.
5. God is everywhere. You never have to wonder where He is.
Wherever you are, He is right by your side.
6. God is all-powerful. There is nothing greater than God.
Regardless of how enormous your challenges and heartaches seem to be, you can overcome them in His power.
7. God is faithful. No matter how far you stray, He never gives up on you. Whatever you have done, He will always welcome you home.
When doubts arise or circumstances shake you, return to
these truths, all of which are solid and unchanging.
