Greenwood Cemetery Preservation Association (GCPA), with support from Beyond Housing and the Missouri Department of Conservation’s Community Forestry Cost Share Program, recently completed projects to strengthen the health and welfare of our community forest. This joint effort addressed tree-related hazards and created an inventory of trees in Greenwood Cemetery.
The projects involved removing at-risk trees, planting native shade and ornamental trees throughout the cemetery and restoring native habitat areas within the grounds. These projects encourage biodiversity in the cemetery’s green spaces, mitigate land erosion, and nurture essential habitats for birds, insects, and other wildlife, thereby maintaining environmental balance.
As GCPA works to restore Greenwood Cemetery, building community partnerships is essential. Beyond Housing stands tall in its efforts to transform communities, as evidenced throughout the cemetery. The Missouri Department of Conservation's Community Forestry Cost Share Program funded improvements to the cemetery's urban forest, improving safety, aesthetics, and air quality. Creating strong community partnerships makes the unimaginable possible.

For the last few years, with the help of Missouri Botanical's Outdoor Youth Corps, Beyond Housing and our dear friend and visionary, Jean Ponzi, we have worked on creating a native grove in Greenwood. It's quite lovely. The folks have taken me under their wing and shared their knowledge of native plants and trees in hope of developing a serene setting for visitors to enjoy. When I think of the many years this place was neglected and to see it become what so many knew it could be (FOG/GCPA). We have a long way to go but it is happening, thanks to so many partnerships (MDC, EWB, CDI, and many more). I believe we will get there. We still have rough areas that need consistent maintenance but we will get there. Just keep watching and better yet, come and help and we will get there faster.

With a grant gifted from the Garden Club of St Louis, and with the help from students from St Charles Community Garden, our butterfly and hummingbird garden has been re-energized with new plants. This is an exciting time for us. Our pergola was vandalized and the garden destroyed in late 2022. The pergola has now been repaired and will be restained soon. With a few more added perks, this area will be beautiful and once again a serene place to sit and reflect. A huge thanks to the Garden Club of St. Louis, you helped make this possible.

The College School, along with their teachers Darel Shelton and Lindsey Ross spent the afternoon with us on Tuesday. It's a broken record that you will hear me say, "we get the best students to come and help us." It is no exaggeration. They are the best and we get to share our stories with them and they come to help us in our mission to make this a place of learning. Thank you.
