You may already know that “green burial” is an eco-friendly burial option. The body is buried in a biodegradable container like a wicker casket or a simple shroud. There is no concrete vault. There is also no embalming, which releases toxic chemicals into the ground. But along with being more environmentally friendly, did you know that green burials are also a more family-friendly burial option? In most cases, the deceased’s loved ones blanket the body with greens and flowers picked for them at the Cemetery, before lowering–and sometimes burying–the body themselves.

“It is sort of a nice way to tuck that person in and gently place that first layer on top of them. It helps families with the closure on the physical aspect of death,” says Gracie Griffin, Bellefontaine Cemetery and Arboretum’s Green Burial expert.

, June 6, 1944: As we mark the 82nd Anniversary of D-Day, we pause to remember the brave men and women who served our nation in World War II.

The greatest tragedy of D-Day would be to forget it. The ultimate sacrifice of our service members for our country and the world will never be forgotten. Their profound bravery fundamentally changed the course of history, securing freedom and liberty for generations to come. We offer our eternal gratitude. Thank you to "the greatest generation."

Each year on the first Friday in June, people participate in National Doughnut Day. This sweet tradition started in 1938 as a fundraiser for Chicago's The Salvation Army, helping those in need during the Great Depression and honoring the brave "Lassies" of World War I. These women traveled to the front lines, serving doughnuts and comfort to bring a piece of normalcy and "home" to soldiers.

During World War II, the American Red Cross created its Clubmobile Service. These roving groups of women, known as "Doughnut Dollies," delivered doughnuts, coffee, entertainment, and a vital connection to home to enlisted men on the front lines.

One of those brave women, Mary Marshall "Chichi" Metcalfe Rexford, a descendant of Chief Justice John Marshall, is interred here at Bellefontaine Cemetery and Arboretum. Mary is credited as being the first woman to land on Utah Beach in Normandy just after D-Day.

During WWII, Mary worked her way across Europe as a Red Cross worker in these Clubmobile teams, serving U.S. and allied troops after battles in France, Belgium, and Germany. She even recalled staying up all night due to the threat of N**i attacks. These ladies witnessed horrors, but Mary always continued serving. Her husband, Oscar Rexford, described her incredible experiences in his book, "Battlestars and Doughnuts."

In 1994, the French government asked her to lay a wreath at Utah Beach in Normandy during memorial services. Mary remained active in the St. Louis J.S. McDonnell USO until her death.

We invite you to take a self-guided tour and visit Mary’s final resting place.

Bellefontaine Cemetery and Arboretum offers Aquamation. This cremation option—also known as flameless cremation and alkaline hydrolysis—offers many of the environmental benefits of a full natural burial, with the flexibility of traditional cremation.

The process uses water instead of flame, expending 85% less energy than traditional cremation. Using a combination of gentle water flow, ordinary salts, and gravity, Aquamation accelerates the natural breakdown of the body. When the process is complete, mineral bone cremated remains—like those from a flame-based cremation—are ready for inurnment or burial.

This gentle process mirrors what naturally happens after a natural burial, but occurs in a period of 12–14 hours instead of several years.

𝐅𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐂𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐲
Choosing Aquamation is not the end of the planning process. Where will your remains rest? While many people want to return cremated remains to nature, it’s important to know that scattering of cremated remains can be harmful to the environment and may be illegal in many public places.

Bellefontaine Cemetery offers several beautiful resting places for cremated remains, from our Hotchkiss Chapel Columbarium or Lakeside Columbarium to traditional burial or in-ground scattering amongst our serene gardens. Cremated remains may be interred at any site that is available for traditional burial. In addition, niches for placing urns with cremated remains are available at our open-air Lakeside Columbarium or in the simple elegance of the Hotchkiss Chapel. Finally, there are gardens available for cremation burial in Wildwood Valley, located near our lakes and the stream that runs between them.

Wherever you choose as your final resting place, make it a beautiful and memorable place. You deserve to be remembered for generations to come.

For more information about this cremation option, please contact Bellefontaine advisors, Gracie or Rick, at 314-381-0750, or visit us online.

Bellefontaine Cemetery and Arboretum’s green burial option is eco-friendly and provides a meaningful experience for families. Called "natural burial," green burial is burial without embalming (using refrigeration instead) in a biodegradable container, with the goal of returning to the earth expeditiously. Bellefontaine allows green burial throughout the Cemetery grounds and can provide all funeral-related services associated with this eco-friendly option.

Those who choose green burial often do so for the environmental benefits and are often moved by the intimacy of the process. Going green offers families the opportunity to participate throughout the burial—from assisting with lowering the body to blanketing the deceased with flowers and greens.

For more information, contact Bellefontaine advisors, Gracie or Rick, at 314-381-0750, or visit https://bellefontainecemetery.org/ecoburial-soc/ to download a free brochure.

Tuesday, June 30 | 2:00 p.m.–3:30 p.m.

Curious about green burial but don’t know what or who to ask? Join Lacey Reinhardt, BCA Event and Volunteer Coordinator, as she provides a closer look at green burial practices, dispels myths, and discusses new trends and options in death-care.

As a Licensed Funeral Director and Death Doula, Lacey will discuss the range of “green” funeral and cemetery options available today, like being laid to rest in a meadow, what one can expect when choosing a green service, and the environmental benefits of this natural burial option as compared to cremation and traditional burial.

This class will be held at the Hotchkiss Chapel at Bellefontaine Cemetery and Arboretum from 2:00 p.m. until 3:30 p.m. with a 1.5-hour presentation and a Q&A to follow. Enter the main gates of the Cemetery at 4947 W. Florissant Ave. then follow the street signs to the Hotchkiss Chapel.
