What if the goal of following Jesus was never about doing more, but about becoming more? This Sunday, we explored one of the most freeing truths in Scripture: our doing flows out of our being.

Jesus said in John 15:5 that if we remain in him, we will bear much fruit: not because we willed it, but because that is what happens when a branch stays connected to the vine. The fruit of the Spirit described in Galatians 5:22-23 is not a checklist. It is the natural evidence of a life rooted in Christ.

The question is not "What am I doing for Jesus?" The question is "Is my Jesus showing?"

Pointing people toward Jesus does not require having all the right words. Sometimes it simply looks like showing up, serving others, noticing people, and choosing to love them well. And when we invite our kids to be part of that, we are showing them that following Jesus is not just something we talk about. It is something we live.

That is what Jesus modeled for us. He noticed people. He moved toward them. He welcomed them in and loved them right where they were.

As families, we have the opportunity to do the same.

Are you coming to church to watch, or are you coming to become? That is the question at the heart of this week's message at Maiden Lane.

Pastor Paul walked us through Matthew 11:9-11, where Jesus reminds the crowd that greatness in the kingdom of God is not reserved for the visible and celebrated. Every follower of Christ, no matter who they are, carries that same calling. The goal is not to admire spiritual people. It is to become one.

Jesus did not say come and watch. He said come and follow. The church is not a show place for spectators. It is a launching pad for disciples. As Ephesians 4:11-13 makes clear, leaders exist to equip God's people for the work, not to do it for them.

This week, ask yourself: what did you come to be?

Sometimes God’s most important work in us happens in places we would never choose for ourselves.

What did you come to find? That is the question Jesus posed to the crowd about John the Baptist in Matthew 11:7-10, and it is the question Pastor Paul brought to us this Sunday.

We often drift toward comfort, expecting church to suit our preferences. But there is a difference between being comfortable and being comforted. Jesus never promised comfort as a foundation for discipleship. He promised something far greater: to meet us in our hardest moments and transform us there.

Like Corrie ten Boom, who found God's faithfulness in a N**i concentration camp, our deepest growth rarely happens in easy places. Matthew 16:24-25 reminds us that following Jesus means denying ourselves, not arranging our lives around what feels good.

This week, when discomfort finds you, try changing the question from "how do I make this stop?" to "Jesus, what do you want to change in me?"
