Dayna Ault, Administrative Assistant

Mission:
"To be a thriving church that reaches and build people to be Christ-like." Historic Washington Avenue Baptist Church is a progressive church that focuses on God through dynamic worship, relevant preaching, relevant teaching, and effective ministry. Our worship services are a blend of traditional, charismatic, and contemporary styles. The ultimate aim is that our diverse, intergenerational congregation, will have a profound encounter with God (in their own way) before they leave our public worship experiences. At Washington Avenue Baptist Church, “You Count and We Care.”

HAPPENING WEDNESDAY AT 6:30 PM

This Wednesday, Dr. Horton will host a special edition of our Wednesday Night Refreshing on Wednesday, October 21, from 6:30 PM to 7:30 PM. This will be an informal “heart check.”

Members are encouraged to discuss anything that has been on their hearts. We will also not shy away from difficult conversations. As a church family, we will hold space for one another, covering one another in prayer.

Childcare will be provided.

2026 WABC Person of the Year: Dr. Ron Woodard: "A Servant Leader."

Dr. Woodard serves with a heart of excellence. He has spent most of his life as an academic leader between Tennessee and Missouri, currently serving as the principal of the award-winning Wilson's Creek Intermediate School, recently named a "National School to Watch." Dr. Woodard also previously led Springfield's Back to School Bash, an event sponsored by Springfield Public Schools that provides free backpacks and school supplies.

At "The Wash," we are honored to have Dr. Woodard as the chair of our Board of Trustees.

To ensure our church is economically viable for future generations, the Board has launched a 3-year capital campaign, which has been a huge success.

Dr. Woodard makes sure we are in compliance with state and federal mandates. He and the Board also steward a number of building projects (most notably the renovation of our fellowship hall and security upgrades). In addition, the Board corresponds with several contractors and vendors throughout the week, handling emergencies to ensure that Washington Avenue is a safe place to fellowship.

With much prayer and consideration, Dr. Woodard led our congregation in a series of difficult discussions and a subsequent vote to have our name officially returned to "Washington Avenue Baptist Church."

He and his wife, Dr. Cicely Woodard, are such a blessing to WABC!

What a beautiful display of God's faithfulness. A very special thanks to everyone who helped us celebrate our 159th Church Anniversary. Also, a huge shout-out to Bishop Lawrence Harkless from Montgomery, Alabama, who encouraged us that our church is "Built to Last."

A MUSICAL LEGACY

As we prepare to celebrate 159 years as a church body, we are looking back at some of the Saints who carried us through.

There’s no doubt that music is a large part of our story. Take a look at this photo of the WABC Men’s Chorus from 1999. It was taken in Grand Prairie, Texas, and features Florence “Nightingale” Adams.

Due to our upcoming 159th Church Anniversary Celebration this weekend, the "Iron Sharpens Iron" men's fellowship will not meet this week. We will return in November.

Continue to pray in accordance with 1 Timothy 2:8: "Therefore, I want the men everywhere to pray, lifting up holy hands without anger or disputing."
