Royce Shelton Dillon, 94, of Collinsville, Virginia, passed away peacefully Friday, January 2, 2026. He was born in Lawsonville, North Carolina, on May 10, 1931, to the late Gentry Dillon and Gertie Mabe Dillon.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Russell Dillon.

Royce was of the Christian faith and attended First Presbyterian Church in Collinsville, Virginia. He proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War era. Before his honorable separation from the armed forces, he received numerous awards including a Combat Infantry Badge, Bronze Star Medal, Presidential Unit Citation (ROK), Korean Service Medal with five Bronze Camp Stars, and a Presidential Unit Citation.

His strong work ethic carried him through 40 years of employment with Dupont Industry as a pipe fitter. Not only did he love his work, but he was proud to represent his hometown. His family will always remember the truth of his sentiment, “I didn’t get you everything you wanted, but I gave you everything you needed.” Known for his quiet confidence, Royce carried himself with integrity and made sure that his family knew they were always loved. His legacy of love and strength will forever be imprinted on the hearts of everyone who knew and loved him.

Royce is survived by his loving wife, Ethel Yvonne Allen Dillon; son, Greg Dillon (Anne); sister, Maxine Amos; nieces, Judy White (Roy), Brenda Moore, Annette Hopper (Donnie); and one grandson, Cameron Peters.

Although all services will be private, the family wishes to express their gratitude for the love and support that has been shown during their time of grief.

Frederick “Freddie” Valentino Hairston, Sr., 70, of Martinsville, Virginia, passed away at his home on Wednesday, December 31, 2025. He was born in Martinsville on December 27, 1955, to Eliza Ann Hairston and the late Rudolph V. Hairston.

In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his brother, Michael Brown.

Freddie attended George Washington Carver High School and worked as a truck driver for Stanley Furniture Company for 40 years. He loved cars, traveling, and playing softball. Freddie was an avid fan of the New England Patriots. He was known for always helping others. His love for his family ran deep, especially his grandchildren.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his son, Frederick V. Hairston, Jr.; sisters, Rhonda H. Colequitt, Cynthia A. Hairston, Shelia W. Hurt (Michael); special loved one, April and Jimmy Hodges; and a special, loving friend, Emily Redd.

A funeral will be held Tuesday, January 6, 2026, at 12:30 PM at Wright Funeral Service Martinsville Chapel. Interment will follow at Fair Haven Memorial Park. Visitation will be held one-half hour prior to the service. There will be a floating visitation Monday, January 5, 2026, from 4:00 - 7:00 PM at Wright Funeral Service Martinsville Chapel. Family will receive guests at the home, located at 389 George Hairston Road, Fieldale, Virginia 24089 from the hours of 1:00 PM – 7:00 PM.

Mary Ruth Carter Hairston, 83, of Martinsville, Virginia, transitioned to her heavenly home Saturday, December 27, 2025. She was born June 27, 1942, in North Carolina to the late Harvey Carter and Mary Magalene Covington Moore.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sisters, Betty France, and Mary Harris.

Mary was of the Christian faith and was a faithful member at Integrity Life Ministries where she loved to fellowship with others at church. She loved to visit and be visited by others. Her love of work and cooking, she passed on to her children, setting a great example of work ethics and provision for their families. Most of all, she loved her grandchildren, loved looking after them and making lasting memories with them that they will hold dear for the rest of their lives. Her life left a lasting impression on this earth, and she will always be fondly remembered.

In addition to her loving husband, Samuel L. Hairston; left to cherish her memories are her daughters, Tara D. Wimbush, Bessie Kent, Jacquiline Brooks (Larry); sons, Franklin DeShazo, Clinton DeShazo (Tracey), Jay C. DeShazo (Loreal); 23 grandchildren; 30 great grandchildren; 2 great great grandchildren; sister, Marquita Wooding; and numerous extended family and friends.

A funeral service will be held Monday, January 5, 2026, at 1:00 PM at Wright Funeral Service Chapel in Martinsville, Virginia. Visitation will be held one-half hour prior to funeral service.

Paisley Anderson Roop, 22, of Collinsville, Virginia, passed away unexpectedly on October 17, 2025. She was born on September 30, 2003, in Martinsville, Virginia, to Stephanie Gregory Roop and Kevin Ryan Roop.

Paisley was a 2022 graduate of Bassett High School and was continuing her education at Patrick & Henry Community College, where she was pursuing her dream of becoming a licensed therapist to help others who struggled with mental illness. Alongside her studies, she worked as a valued associate at Walmart. Paisley had a creative soul and a deep love for animals, always showing compassion for those around her.

She was preceded in death by her paternal grandparents, Marshall Stanley Roop and Mary Ann Garten.

Left to cherish her memory are her loving parents, Stephanie and Kevin Roop; her grandparents, Bobby and Terese Gregory; her sister, Kali Roop; her nieces, Nova and Avani; along with a number of aunts, uncles, cousins, and dear friends who will forever hold her in their hearts.

Paisley’s life, though far too short, was filled with love, creativity, and a passion for helping others. Her memory will continue to inspire kindness and compassion in all who were blessed to know her.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held Saturday, October 25, 2025, at 7:00 PM at Wright Funeral Service Bassett Chapel, 1230 Oak Level Road, Bassett, Virginia 24055.
