🌈 Open & Affirming Sunday

On the first Sunday in June, we celebrate Open and Affirming Sunday.

At Zion, we believe that the church is called to offer more than welcome.
We are called to cultivate true belonging.

We affirm that all people are created in the image of God,
and that our LGBTQ+ siblings are not outside of that truth,
but beautifully and intentionally part of it.

Your identity is not something to be questioned or tolerated.
It is something to be honored as part of God’s creative work in the world.

We celebrate the diversity of God’s creation,
knowing that it is in that diversity that the fullness of God’s image is revealed more clearly.

And we commit ourselves not only to words of affirmation,
but to the ongoing work of justice.

We will continue to advocate for the well-being, dignity, and full inclusion
of our LGBTQ+ friends, siblings, and neighbors,
in the church and in the world.

Because this is what love looks like.
Because this is what the Gospel calls us to.

All are beloved.
All belong.

What is Pride Month really about?

For some, the word pride can sound uncomfortable. As Christians, we often associate pride with arrogance or self-importance.

But that's not what Pride Month is about.

Pride is not about believing you're better than anyone else.

It's about visibility in a world that often demanded silence.

It's about belonging in a world that often excluded.

It's about dignity in a world that too often communicated shame.

Jesus taught us to love our neighbors as ourselves. That means recognizing the sacred worth in others and in ourselves. Pride is the courage to reject shame and embrace the truth that every person is worthy of love, respect, and belonging.

In a world that teaches some people to hide, Pride is the courage to be seen. In a world that teaches some people they don't belong, Pride is the declaration that they do.

And the church should be one of the first places to say so.

If you've been hurt by religion, if you're searching for a faith community where you can bring your whole self, or if you're a person of faith wrestling with what full inclusion means, we invite you to join us for Open and Affirming Sunday at Zion Community Church.

Together we'll explore God's radical welcome, Christ's call to love, and what it means to build a community where everyone belongs. This service will offer a message of hope, healing, and affirmation for those who have been wounded by faith communities, while also creating space for thoughtful reflection and faithful conversation to follow.

Following worship, stay for a special Christian education hour:

Faithfully and Fully: A Q***r Christian Journey

In this conversation, I'll share parts of my own story as a q***r Christian, the challenges and questions I wrestled with, the ways my faith has evolved, and why I believe LGBTQ+ people can be fully affirmed in the life of the church. There will also be space for questions, discussion, and honest dialogue.

Whether you're seeking healing, understanding, affirmation, or simply a place to learn, you are welcome.

Sunday, June 7
Worship at 10:00 AM

If all you did today was get out of bed, take a breath, or make it through the day…

That matters.

Healing is not always big, dramatic transformation.
Sometimes it is quiet, slow, and almost invisible.

In our faith, we trust that God is present in the small things too.

So be gentle with yourself.

You are doing more than you think.

On Pentecost, we remember that our faith is not something fixed in the past.

We do not believe in a faith that is static or immobile,
frozen in time or confined to what has already been.

We believe in a faith that is alive.

Alive because Christ is alive,
not simply a figure of history, but a living presence among us.

Alive because the Spirit is still moving,
still stirring hearts, still disrupting what is comfortable,
still calling the Church beyond itself and into the world.

Alive because the stories of our faith,
the witness of those who came before us, preserved in Scripture,
continue to speak, reveal, challenge, and guide us.

This is the promise of Pentecost:
that the same Spirit who filled the disciples then, fills us now.

And that Spirit does not leave us unchanged.

It sends us out,
to feed the hungry,
to heal the sick,
to welcome the stranger,
to embody the love of Christ in a world that is still longing for good news.

God is still speaking.
The Spirit is still moving.
And we are still being called.

Come, Holy Spirit.

What a wonderful afternoon of music this past Sunday as the Silvertones brought the 2025–2026 Music in the Hoyt series to a joyful close. We are so grateful for everyone who came out to support the arts and celebrate the gift of music in our community.

A special thank you to Michael Snyder for his leadership, vision, and dedication in coordinating these events throughout the year and helping make the arts accessible and meaningful for so many in our community. We are thankful for all who shared their gifts and helped make this series such a success.

It is a blessing and privilege to host these events and we are looking forward to many more to come!

Mental Health Awareness Month Reminder:

Asking for help is not a lack of faith.
It is an act of courage.

Seeing a therapist, taking medication, setting boundaries, saying “I’m not okay”, these are not signs that something is wrong with you.

They are signs that you are taking your life seriously.

God works through community, through care, through support, through people.

You don’t have to carry everything on your own.

And you were never meant to.
