The garden was absolutely alive with butterflies and other insects today. At least four different monarchs are using it as a migration stop. There were the usual cabbage whites, a couple of buckeyes, some little orange skippers, a cabbage looper, a Compton tortoiseshell (new species!!!!) and some black soldier flies. Check out the closeup of their awesome eyeballs! My photo doesn't have fantastic resolution, but you can see the stripes, and the high res picture from iNat is incredible.

Sometimes things look very different on the outside vs. the inside. This beautiful tortoiseshell butterfly looks exactly like a beat up dead leaf with its wings closed, but they're spectacular on the inside!

Want to help record butterfly populations? Go out tomorrow and take photos! iNaturalist is actually a pretty good app for identifying all sorts of plants and critters, so it's not a bad idea to have it on your phone anyway if you're interested in learning more about the natural world around you.

The Potawatomi have been using our native plants for centuries and have a long history with them. I didn't know about the antibacterial properties of bee balm, though most of the mints have at least some medicinal utility, so I'm not surprised.

Do you like cherry tomatoes? There's not a ton else ready to pick in the garden right now besides herbs, but boy do we ever have cherry tomatoes. Several varieties, pick your favorite! I'm partial to the orange round ones for snacking sweetness, and the tiny red ones for true tomato flavor in Fun Size.
