Thank you to those who came out and helped with the garden this morning! I didn't take a lot of photos myself, but hopefully I'll get a few more from Joe. We got the second raised bed filled and planted, lots of compost turned and spread and chopped, weeds pulled, flowers planted, and a bit of pruning done. And we found a family of church mice in the compost heap helping break down the weeds and veggie scraps!

The garden is LOVING that thunderstorm we had last night! Remember that lightning and rain together actually fertilizes the soil as well as watering it. The lightning energy breaks molecular bonds in atmospheric nitrogen (N2, which makes up 78% of the air we breathe but isn't a form usable by most living things) and it reacts with oxygen to form nitrogen dioxide (NO2), which is water soluble. The rain brings it down, and helpful soil bacteria convert it into nitrates that plants can use. So if you've noticed that your garden looks greener after a good thunderstorm, you're not imagining it!

BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE!

We just delivered a fresh load of freebie plants to the corner by the fire escape. Loads of tomatoes and peppers, zucchini, a few cucumbers and melons, leeks, chard, marjoram, tarragon, stevia, lemon balm, petunias, snapdragons, verbena, and a couple random other things. Take what you can plant and enjoy, and thank you Martin's Greenhouse,South Bend,IN !

Be aware that traffic is still a little funny thanks to the fire yesterday on the next block over, and the crew fixing that downed light pole on the corner.

Who wants plants?!

There are free veggie and herb plants available in the corner of the butterfly garden near the fire escape. Lots of tomatoes and peppers, marjoram, leeks, lemon balm, and assorted other stuff, all courtesy of the finest plant place in town, Martin's Greenhouse,South Bend,IN . There will be more, but this was all I could fit in my van on one trip. Please help yourself to whatever you have room for!

Please note, this applies ONLY to the flats of small plants in the corner of the lot. The large pots are our unity garden stock that we are preparing to go into raised beds. You are always welcome to pick fruits and veggies from those as they ripen, but please don't take the pots or the plants in them.

If you ever think you don't have enough room to help, take it up with these little guys! My mom has a tiny garden patch outside her apartment window at the assisted living facility, and it has ONE swamp milkweed plant in it. Today we noticed it was missing some leaves, and we found fifteen monarch butterfly caterpillars on it! I have no idea how far away the next nearest milkweed plant might be, but somehow a mother butterfly found this one when she needed it.

We did relocate about half of them to reduce stress on the plant, so look for some of these beauties in the cathedral garden. By the look of them, they'll look like this for the next day or two, then find a hiding spot for the great transformation. If all goes well, they should take flight in about a week or two after that!
