This Sunday in OHBC Kids we kicked off our new series “Doing It Wrong” by teaching from James 1:2–4 and talking about how we often look at problems the wrong way.

We started the morning with some funny tricky word problems like:
If a plane crashes on the US/Canada border, where do you bury the survivors?
If an electric train is moving south, which way does the smoke blow?

We used those type of questions to help teach an important truth: sometimes things are not what they first seem.
We talked about how nobody likes hard times: (losing games, friendship problems, struggles at school, disappointment, fear, difficult family situations)

But James teaches us that God can use hard moments to grow our faith stronger. Just like muscles grow through resistance, our faith can grow during difficult seasons when we continue trusting God.

We reminded the kids that hard times do not mean God has forgotten them. God sees them, loves them, and walks with them through every situation.
Our big takeaway: “God is with me in hard times.”

A few great questions to ask your child this week:
What was your favorite tricky word problem?
What are some hard things kids face?
How can hard times help us trust God more?

Thank you for allowing us to invest in your children each week. We truly love your families and count it a privilege to point kids to Jesus!

Parents, here’s what we talked about today at OHBC Kids

Today we talked about how sin traps and chains people.

We used chains/ropes as a picture and asked:
Would it be hard to run, play basketball, or do everyday things while chained up?
That’s what sin does.

At first sin looks: fun, harmless, exciting
But over time: lying gets easier, anger grows, bad habits form

Sin promises freedom… but it actually traps us.
We looked at the story of Samson and Delilah (Judges 16). Samson thought he could play around with sin and stay in control, but eventually sin cost him his freedom and left him in chains.

The good news:
John 8:36 “So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.”
Jesus doesn’t just forgive us…He sets us free.

Talk about it at home:
What are some sins kids can get trapped in?
Why does sin seem fun at first?
What happened to Samson?
What does Jesus set us free from?

Bottom line: Sin chains people…But Jesus frees people.

Parents, here’s what we talked about today at OHBC Kids
Today’s big truth: Sin always costs something.

Romans 6:23 (ESV)
“For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

We talked about how sin is like something that looks good at first…
but later you realize:
“That was NOT worth it.” BUYERS REMORSE
We used examples (bad purchases, broken toys, etc.) to show:
Sin promises something good…but it always costs more than you think.

Bible Story: Adam & Eve (Genesis 3)
Sin looked: good, fun, exciting
But immediately it brought:
shame, fear, hiding, separation

Sin always takes more than it promises.
We also talked about how sin lies to us:
“It’s not a big deal”
“Nobody will know”
“Just this once”

But even “small” sins grow and they always cost something:
peace, joy, trust, closeness with God

The Good News
Sin costs…but Jesus already paid.
Jesus took our punishment
Jesus carried our sin
Jesus paid what we owed
Salvation is a gift, not something we earn.

Talk about it at home:
What are some things that seem good at first but aren’t worth it later?
What did Adam & Eve lose because of sin?
Why does sin always cost something?
What did Jesus do for us?

Bottom line:
Sin will always take more than it gives…but Jesus gives more than we could ever deserve.

Parents, here’s what we talked about today (1st-5th - 11:00 Service)
Today we talked about sin and staying away from it.
We started with a simple picture:
🚫 “DANGER – DO NOT TOUCH – HOT!” Why don’t we touch it?
👉 Because we know it will hurt us.
Then we connected it: 👉 Sin is like that warning sign.
God isn’t trying to ruin our fun He’s trying to protect us.
What we taught:
Sin is choosing our way instead of God’s
Sin hurts us, hurts others, and separates us from God
The Bible says to run from sin (2 Timothy 2:22)
Bible story: David & Saul (1 Samuel 24)
David had the perfect chance to do wrong—and no one would’ve stopped him.
But instead of getting even… 👉 he chose not to sin
We told the kids:
👉 Staying away from sin isn’t just running…
👉 sometimes it’s choosing not to do it even when you can
What this looks like for kids:
walking away from bad situations
turning off something they shouldn’t watch
saying no
asking for help
And we reminded them:
👉 We won’t always get it right
👉 But when we mess up, we run to Jesus (1 John 1:9)
Talk about it at home:
What is sin?
Why is it like a warning sign?
What does it mean to “run from sin”?
What did David choose to do?
Bottom line:
Sin promises something good…
👉 but it always leads to something bad

Parents, here’s what we talked about today in kids BLAST (11am - 1st-5th Grade)👇
Today we talked about sin and what to do with it.
We used something every kid understands:
🗑️ taking out the trash
What happens if you don’t take the trash out?
👉 It piles up, stinks, and makes a mess
👉 Sin works the same way
The good news:
John 1:29 – Jesus takes away our sin
1 John 1:9 – When we confess, He forgives
We reminded the kids:
We don’t clean up our own sin
We don’t hide it
👉 We bring it to Jesus
Talk about it at home:
What is sin?
Why is it like trash?
What do we do with it?
Bottom line:
Following Jesus isn’t about being perfect…
👉 it’s about knowing what to do when you’re not.
Bring it to Jesus.

Our kids don’t just need another volunteer.
They need faithful adults who will show up, love them, and point them to Jesus.
