Holy Saturday

Today we sit in the stillness and the silence of the tomb.

Even when nothing seems to move, God is working: preparing resurrection, preparing hope, preparing us.

On the cross, Christ accomplished everything needed for our salvation.
Not by our works, but by His mercy.

By faith, we receive what He has already finished:
forgiveness, life, and peace.

It's been a busy and blessed week for supporters of St. Dysmas Lutheran Church.

We had Worship at Springfield on Tuesday and on The Hill on Thursday.

We are also thankful to the group of volunteers who showed up to help stuff envelopes for our annual Easter mailing. Not only do we appreciate the extra hands, we always enjoy the conversation and laughter that comes with it.

Don H. shares his thoughts on Mark 4:35-41:

When I see the story unfold in Mark, chapter 4, I see the disciples that have been with the Lord for some time that are hardened seamen freak out scared and even complain when they see Jesus taking a nap! Jesus rebukes the storm and calms the sea.

Then he chastises them for NOT having faith and NOT taking him at his word when he said: "Let us cross over to the other side." (verse 35)

I think about what those folks were going through. I also ask this question: am I taking Jesus at his word even when the storms of life rage and it seems the Lord is taking a nap? What boat am I on? So, I ask you, Friend, what boat are you in?

For years, many of these women have been told their time incarcerated is just a “gap.” A blank space. Something to explain away.
Today, we flipped that narrative. 💛

The ladies at Saint Francis worked through their resume discovery — pulling out real skills, real growth, and real experience from a season of their lives that deserves to be seen, not hidden.

And then one of our quieter members shared something that said it all: this program has helped her anxiety, given her the confidence to speak up with her doctor, and encouraged her to show up more fully in her own rehabilitation.

That’s not a gap. That’s transformation.

This group of women shows up every single week with gratitude, honesty, and a fierce commitment to building something better. To Kenna, our incredible intern who walks alongside them — thank you. 🤍

To these ladies: we see you. We are your biggest cheerleaders, and we cannot wait to watch you walk back into this world and show everyone exactly who you are.

Your resume isn’t a confession. It’s an introduction.

For today's devotion, Jordan B selected Isaiah 41:9-13

I have called you back from the ends of the earth,
saying 'you are my servant.'

For I have chosen you
and will not throw you away.

Do not be afraid, for I am with you.
I will hold you up with my victorious right hand.

See, all your angry enemies lie there,
confused and humiliated.

Anyone who opposes you will die
and come to nothing.

You will look in vain
for those who tried to conquer you.

Those who attack you
will come to nothing.

For I hold you by your right hand -
I, the Lord your god.

And I say to you,
'Don't be afraid. I am here to help you.'

Friends from Zion Lutheran in Hartford, SD, and some of our Associate Council members joined us for worship on Thursday.

We started the Holden Evening Prayer liturgy this week; the guys love to sing it.

Pr Laura also got to baptize one of our new attendees.

It makes such an impact when visitors come and worship with us. It lets the guys know that they are not forgotten, or are just garbage.

Thank you to all that make the time to come and experience this powerful work of the Holy Spirit!

On "Ash Thursday" we gathered with members of our Associate Council for Worship on the Hill.

During service, we remember our mortality, but we also remember this: we are indelibly marked with the cross of Christ. As Pr Laura preached, that promise is never, ever taken from us.

Today's devotion comes from Don H.

He selected Psalm 51:17 (KJV): "The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise."

Don writes: Are you broken? Is life smashing down? Has the weight of your sin smashed you to pieces and broken your heart? Are you to the point of just tapping out? Good! That is where God wants you so he can work on you. And like the Master Crafter he is, he will fix all the cracks and make you whole again.

King David wrote these words after he committed adultery with Bathsheba and had her husband, Uriah, murdered (read 2 Samuel 11-12 for the whole story - it's a great read!). God had the prophet Nathan call him out. David wrote all of Psalm 51 (it is a great read too!).

You bet he was broken and God restored him too! So Friend, if you are truly broken, cling to Jesus and let him mend your broken heart.

Prayer: Gracious Lord, please heal my broken spirit. Mend the cracks and put a balm on my broken heart. Amen.
