Deuteronomy 4:28 But charge Joshua, and encourage him, and strengthen him: for he shall go over before this people, and he shall cause them to inherit the land
This is the time of year for graduation. We have watched many who have grown from rowdy tykes crawling under the pews into eye rolling teenagers saturated with attitude, and now are young men and women ready to start “adulting” in life (but haven’t yet lost the eye roll). It will be these coming after us who will take the church into the places that God is leading.
Moses came to this point in his life. He longed to go forward into the promised land himself, but the Lord would not grant his request. He instead was called to encourage and strengthen Joshua to cause his church to inherit their promise.
We must understand that as we progress in our walk with the Lord, that we have an urgent mandate from heaven to invest in the future of the church. That investment is a constant process. We are to do the same thing God commanded Moses...charge, strengthen, and encourage others to press into the promises of God. That isn’t limited to family, it is an investment in new believers of all ages.
Some have said things like “I don’t want a big church”. They are comfortable with its size, methods, and familiarity. What they are really saying is, “I don’t want my church to last”. Their wish will eventually come to pass. Everything will stay the same, and when the last of the familiar dies off, the doors will close, and the promise will be lost.
It is God’s prerogative as to a church’s size, methods, and ministry. Our purpose is to love the people and invest in their lives. Discipleship is the only mandate Christ left us. And in order for the church to last and inherit God’s promises, we are to charge, strengthen and encourage as God directs, for a vibrant future!
