Deuteronomy 4:28 But charge Joshua, and encourage him, and strengthen him: for he shall go over before this people, and he shall cause them to inherit the land
This is the time of year for graduation. We have watched many who have grown from rowdy tykes crawling under the pews into eye rolling teenagers saturated with attitude, and now are young men and women ready to start “adulting” in life (but haven’t yet lost the eye roll). It will be these coming after us who will take the church into the places that God is leading.
Moses came to this point in his life. He longed to go forward into the promised land himself, but the Lord would not grant his request. He instead was called to encourage and strengthen Joshua to cause his church to inherit their promise.
We must understand that as we progress in our walk with the Lord, that we have an urgent mandate from heaven to invest in the future of the church. That investment is a constant process. We are to do the same thing God commanded Moses...charge, strengthen, and encourage others to press into the promises of God. That isn’t limited to family, it is an investment in new believers of all ages.
Some have said things like “I don’t want a big church”. They are comfortable with its size, methods, and familiarity. What they are really saying is, “I don’t want my church to last”. Their wish will eventually come to pass. Everything will stay the same, and when the last of the familiar dies off, the doors will close, and the promise will be lost.
It is God’s prerogative as to a church’s size, methods, and ministry. Our purpose is to love the people and invest in their lives. Discipleship is the only mandate Christ left us. And in order for the church to last and inherit God’s promises, we are to charge, strengthen and encourage as God directs, for a vibrant future!

James 1:26 If any man among you seem to be religious, and bridles not his tongue, but deceives his own heart, this man’s religion is vain.
James, the Lord’s brother, was such a practical teacher. The influence of Christ’s daily life, not just during ministry, but in the home, among the family, and growing up in ordinary life, must have had such an astounding effect on James. It was not just the ministry of his elder half brother that amazed him, it was the simple practical way he lived.
For this reason James gives us some of the best litmus tests of pure religion. One of those is the use of the tongue. James admonishes us that if we encounter anyone who seems to have a pious and devoted life towards God, but yet that same person cannot control their tongue. Then all their religious devotion is empty and useless.
Bridles are used in horses mouths to control the direction, pace, and obedience of the horse. These large animals have tremendous power, but that power is useless unless it is under control.
The same is true of our tongue. The tongue is a subject James revisits in chapter 3. He addresses its power and potential, but here he simply says, anyone who shows religious devotion, yet does not have control of his this simplest member, is deceived in their heart. Jesus confirmed this when He said, “from the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks”. Our tongue will reveal our hearts. So let us have grace, not only for ourselves, but toward others, by making sure our tongue is directed properly, is under control, is considerate of others. That starts with a search of the heart. If our Christianity is truly sincere, and devoted toward a more Christ-like character, then we will allow the Holy Spirit to search out heart, reveal our lack, and bridle out tongue. Let your speech be always with grace, seasoned with salt, that you may know how you ought to answer every man. (Col 4:6)
