The Church will celebrate the solemnity of Corpus Christi on Sunday, June 7. The feast, instituted in 1264 by Pope Urban IV, highlights the Church’s faith in the Real Presence of Jesus Christ in the Eucharist. “Corpus Christi” is Latin for “Body of Christ,” drawing our attention to Christ truly present under the appearances of bread and wine.

Throughout history, deep devotion to Christ in the Blessed Sacrament has marked the lives of the saints; by following their example, we too can grow in love for Jesus present in the Eucharist and strengthen our friendship with him through his Body and Blood.

Come, Holy Spirit 🔥🕊️

Today we celebrate Pentecost, the anniversary of the Church, when the Holy Spirit descended, giving the Apostles the grace, courage, and wisdom to go out and proclaim the Gospel to all the world.

May we open our hearts to the Holy Spirit and be ready to share Christ's message to all we encounter.

Q: Why does the Church particularly celebrate Mary in May?

A: In 1965, St. Paul VI published the encyclical "Mense Maio" ("The Month of May") on prayers during May for the preservation of world peace. In part, the encyclical detailed the church's special devotion to Mary during May: "The month of May is ... a month which the piety of the faithful has long dedicated to Mary, the Mother of God. Our heart rejoices at the thought of the moving tribute of faith and love which will soon be paid to the Queen of Heaven in every corner of the earth. For this is the month during which Christians, in their churches and their homes, offer the Virgin Mother more fervent and loving acts of homage and veneration; and it is the month in which a greater abundance of God's merciful gifts comes down to us from our Mother's throne."

In the Holy Trinity, the Holy Spirit may be the toughest to understand. Jesus uses the word "Advocate" in John's Gospel. While the original Greek word "Parakletos" is sometimes translated as "Comforter" or "Counselor," most translators of the Gospels use "Advocate," which reflects the Greek usage of the word -- one who speaks for you in a court of law.

The New Testament passage that gives us the clearest understanding of the word's meaning is found in 1 John 2:1. In this passage the word "Paraclete" is applied to Jesus: "But if anyone does sin, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous one." Here, Jesus is seen as pleading our case with the Father, arguing that we deserve mercy and that we should be forgiven for our sinfulness.

In John 14:16, Jesus says that he "will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate to be with you always." This Advocate that the Father will send will be "the Spirit of truth" (Jn 14:17).

In this way, we will not be left as orphans, which should give us comfort and hope. "The Advocate, the Holy Spirit that the Father will send in my name -- he will teach you everything and remind you of all that (I) told you" (Jn 14:26).

On this Ascension Sunday, we celebrate when Christ ascended to heaven to be with the Father and reign in glory. But He has not left the world behind. He promises that He will always be with us and He entrusts the faithful with a mission: carry His love, hope, and truth into the world.

How are you being called to be Christ's witness today?

From Diocesan archives: It's always a joy to watch children receive the sacraments of first Holy Communion and confirmation. We pray for all those receiving those sacraments this year that they may be strengthened by the Holy Spirit to lead lives dedicated to God.
Here's the first Communion class of 1949 in Oak Ridge.
May God Bless Holy Family's 8 students receiving Holy Communion for the first time this Sunday at 11:00am Mass.

During her apparitions, Our Lady of Fatima instructed the children of Fatima to pray and offer penance for souls who need it. Throughout the rest of their earthly lives, all three children insisted their relationship with God was the most important part of their lives. May we draw inspiration from their fervor and turn to our source of life in prayer. 🙏
