What if you had a clean canvas to create a community experience that helped people know God, care for others beyond themselves and enjoy authentic relationships? Sixteen people from University Presbyterian Church were given the opportunity to start fresh and in October 2006 the Union Church community began to meet. Seeing that people grow the most when their lives include community, worship, and s
erving others, the Union community began to come together in a monthly rhythm combining those three activities. Believing that the city did not need another church building but that South Lake Union could benefit from a "third place" gathering space as the community began to grow. The space was re-purposed to be a venue for the neighborhood, nonprofits, celebrations, corporate events, the arts, and a chocolate café to aid in the growth of the community. Those are some of the broad strokes on the canvas. Other brush strokes include serving at Seattle Cancer Care Alliance, with Immanuel Community Services, providing an overflow shelter with Noel House, engaging with the homeless and elderly, and hauling trash out of Lake Union through our fourth Sunday emphasis on serving others We partner with DOXA in building homes in Tijuana, and work with and through IJM to abolish human trafficking locally and around the world. With the paint still wet, Union is a growing community of 250 people from around Seattle in every stage of life seeking to add color and more to the gospel story that's coming together on this canvas. And where did the Union name come from? Geographically we are based in the South Lake Union area, but the name also captures our desire to be in union with Jesus, one another, and the Holy Spirit’s activity in the world.
