This past Wednesday, June 10, 2026, the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC), the largest Protestant denomination in the country, voted again to bar women pastors. If this vote goes the same way next year, the prohibition will be become part of the denomination’s constitution. This from a denomination that has its roots (and perhaps one could contend its conception) in its justification and defense of Black African enslavement by White Americans.

But, I want to be sure to examine the log in my own eye in addition to focusing on the speck in my neighbor’s eye. (Though, to be sure, misogyny, sexism, and racism are far more than “specks.”) Lutheran denominations that ordain women have only been doing so for 56 years in this country, and internationally since 1948 (the first occurrences being in Denmark).

So while the decision by the SBC is disheartening, frustrating, and disappointing, it is not surprising.

Here is the thing. Those of us who are Christians get a lot of things wrong, and this is just another example. We have blamed Eve for the fall of humanity through original sin, though nothing of this doctrine can be supported Biblically. We have hyper focused on Mary’s sexuality (or lack thereof), so much so that it overshadows her boldness and prophetic witness. We make the Woman at the Well story about her martial history and not her incredible life altering evangelism. Say nothing of later male scribes who deliberately erased Junia as a named apostle, of later male editors who added in the part of women being silent in church, and of men today who are so caught up the church’s patriarchy they do not dare to call out other men/themselves and can even consider dismantling it.

Here is the truth. Not ordaining women, just like misogyny, sexism, and racism is not just unbiblical, it is sinning against the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Here is what I know. All people made in the image of the divine, Jesus calls all kinds of people to ministry, and the Holy Spirit equips each and every one of us.

So, yeah, the SBC can do better. But, so can all of us.

“I am incredibly proud that Elizabeth Gregory Home is seen and felt in the community as a safe space for our LGBTQIA+ guests. They share that they feel seen, heard, safe, and loved here, which of course is our goal. We want everyone to feel like they belong here, can be themselves, and matter. I am incredibly saddened and angry by the hatred and demonization of transgender people in our society. They are humans, just like you and me, who are bravely being their true and authentic selves, and for that, they should be celebrated and loved, not just during Pride Month, but all year long!” - Ally Baehr, EGH Executive Director

Elizabeth Gregory Home is a safe and caring space where everyone, including our LGBTQIA+ guests, can feel welcome and seen.❤️🧡💛💚💙💜 🤍🩷🩵🤎🖤
