Walking in faithful obedience, especially when you don’t feel ready, is more honorable than waiting until you think you can walk in perfection.

Maybe it’s something the Lord has nudged you to do, or a person God has asked you to reach out to, or a way you know He wants you to better steward your health. These are some of the things God prompts that we rarely feel ready to lean into. So we wait.

There are always distractions, and other things that seem to need our attention first. We build a mental checklist of everything we must do to be ready for what God has asked. But what if, for just a moment, we considered how much good seed could be planted through us in the time we spend putting it off?

Good seed is planted in obedience. It grows from faith that God can use us right where we are, just as we are, when He asks something of us.

Ecclesiastes 11:4 (ESV) says: “He who observes the wind will not sow, and he who regards the clouds will not reap.”

Let’s not be the farmer who waits for ideal circumstances or certainty to plant. Let’s be the farmer who hears the Lord and responds in faith, trusting that whatever the outcome, God is already there.

What might you be putting off that God is inviting you to step into? Let’s not miss the good seed He wants to plant through our faith today.

Isaiah 54:17 (NCV)
“So no weapon that is used against you will defeat you. You will show that those who speak against you are wrong. These are the good things my servants receive. Their victory comes from me,” says the Lord.

No weapon formed against you will prosper.

I woke up this morning with this thought on my mind and a Wheatful Wednesday devotion to write.

As I sat with the Lord, praising Him, seeking Him, and listening, an overwhelming sense of spiritual authority and strength came over me. It felt like I had been suited up for battle.

When I opened my Bible to Isaiah 54:17, the page was filled with notes of truth. A voice message from a friend was waiting on my phone, echoing this same word. She sent it without knowing what God had shown me that morning. The peace that settled in my heart could only have come from Him, and I knew this is where we were going to go deep today.

The prophet Isaiah first spoke this promise as a word of restoration and defense, and as a reminder that God is a God of justice, after a season of severe hardship and captivity.

This verse does not promise that trials, opposition, and injustice will never touch us. Scripture tells us the opposite, that trials will come (John 16:33). What it does promise is that any harm our enemy, Satan, builds against us will fail to accomplish the destruction it was meant for. God pursues His people and rescues them in heart and in salvation.

False accusations against you will not stand.

Hardship will not have the final word.

Brokenness may be present in your life, but God’s love is always abundant in your heart.

Some translations describe the “good things” in our NCV passage as a “divine heritage.” Salvation and the companionship of the Holy Spirit in our trials are not earned by human strength. They are an inheritance given directly by God to His servants.

When we were walking the road of waiting for our children through an infertility diagnosis and loss, a friend shared a dream with us. God had asked her to remind me that “the greater the struggle, the higher the calling.” I’ve held those words for the last five years, and I’ve found one thing to be true: God doesn’t waste anything. He doesn’t will or wish hardship on us, but the brokenness of our world delivers it anyway. What should always point us back to our good God is seeing harm turned into something beautiful, something that could not have existed with the same magnitude if we hadn’t walked through the struggle with the Lord beside us.

Hardship produces awareness. When we wrestle with the Lord in hard seasons, we often see His hand more clearly. And when we know what heartbreak feels like, we recognize fulfillment when it arrives and give credit where credit is due. Glory to God.

So today, if you’re sitting in a circumstance that feels “not good,” as my 3-year-old would put it, remember this: God’s goodness is not dependent on our circumstances being good. Because God is faithful, we can obey Him even when we cannot yet see the harvest.

Where do you need to trust Him with a harvest you can’t see yet?

Lord, thank You that no weapon formed against us will prosper, and that our victory comes from You. Meet us in the hard places and show us Your hand at work. Help us obey You while we wait for the harvest. Amen.

Our beautiful WaterColor, Florida beach town had a hurricane heading straight for it late last week, and there was nothing we could do to stop it.

The winds and rain were brewing, and it was simply a waiting game.

We watched as our friends who live locally prepared and waited. Thankfully, our friends are safe, and it could have been far worse.

As I sat down during nap time to write today's devo, with this recent hurricane and the emotions surrounding our friends and this special place fresh on my heart, I couldn't help but see the parallels between a hurricane and the circumstances that come our way in life.

So much of what we face is beyond our control. We can't control the weather or the storms that come our way in life. But we can choose where we turn our attention and what we allow to take root in our hearts.

I was studying Paul's prayer in Ephesians 3 this week, particularly verses 14–21, after one of our retreat guests sent a timely note of encouragement my way. I love how we notice the Holy Spirit using the people around us to encourage us at just the right time, if we have eyes to see it.

Paul prays that believers would be strengthened by the Holy Spirit, that Christ would dwell in their hearts through faith, and that they would be rooted and grounded in love. He prays that they would begin to comprehend the immeasurable love of Christ and be filled with the fullness of God.

He closes by reminding us that God is able to do far more than we could ever ask or imagine, according to His power at work within us.

We can't always control what's happening around us, but we can fix our eyes on Jesus, depend on the strength of His Spirit, and choose to walk in His love.

We saw this lived out in the local 30A community as neighbors linked arms, picking up debris in yards beyond their own, offering shelter to families without power, and finding ways to care for and check on one another.

This is what happens when Christ's love takes root in us. We become people who show up for one another, not because we have everything under control, but because our strength comes from Him. We are one family in Christ.

We may not control the storm, but we can learn to live rooted in the One who sustains us through it.

What circumstance might you be trying to control right now that isn't yours to manage? How might God be inviting you to remain rooted in His love and rely on His strength as you navigate it today?

I’ll Do It Later

I’ll exhale when I have space.

But an exhale requires a pause to breathe in—a choice to trust that the pause is worth the coming exhale.

So often, we wait for peace until everything feels settled. We tell ourselves, I’ll breathe when this is over. I’ll rest when I have more time. I’ll feel joy when things finally line up.

But the joy and alignment we experience with the Lord often come after we trust Him, not before.

Peace comes as we walk out faith through action.

Trust is a pathway into God’s presence.

The exhale we sometimes dangle in front of ourselves like a carrot is actually something we can reach for right now and experience. And here’s the beautiful part: the exhale doesn’t just last for the two seconds it takes to breathe out. It equips us to take the next step in His presence, with His power.

We all live under the lie that later is better.

But what if today we became “exhale today” people?

What if we trusted God enough to pause, breathe, obey, and receive the peace He is offering us right here—not because everything is resolved, but because He is with us in the middle of it?

A few Scriptures to hold onto as we trust and exhale today:
Philippians 4:6–7 NIV “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

Proverbs 3:5–6 NIV “Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.”

Hebrews 11:1 NIV “Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.”

2 Corinthians 5:7 NIV “For we live by faith, not by sight.”

Tomorrow starts a new month, a new season. October.

What might God get the glory for if we all paused today and thought about what renewal in our lives could look like?

What’s one thing you can do to better protect your mind?

Maybe it’s putting your phone away in the evening hours, eliminating that instant access to your attention, so you can walk barefoot in the grass in your backyard, chase your kids around, or sit in your favorite chair uninterrupted as you read a good book.

Maybe it’s setting aside half a day each week when you don’t work, worry about the chores around the house, or try to make the day productive. You simply let the day unfold with a Sabbath heart posture.

Maybe it’s saying “yes” less often, but more intentionally.

What is one thing you could do beginning tomorrow that might give your life more space to breathe, to make room for the things that give you life, perspective, and rest?

Because I think sometimes our spiritual health is helped by making space.

Today is September 30th. In Ezekiel 1:1, the prophet describes receiving his first vision “in the thirtieth year.” While Scripture doesn’t give us a specific spiritual meaning for the number thirty, I love the idea of a marker, a moment in time that reminds us to stop, pay attention, and remember that God is at work.

Ezekiel's ministry would carry a profound message of both judgment and hope. He would proclaim God's promise to restore His people, cleanse them, give them a new heart and spirit, and ultimately dwell among them in His glory.

Sometimes we need a marker.

We need to mark a moment as holy, not because the moment itself has special power, but because sometimes our hearts need a clear point in time to stop, remember, and respond to what God is doing.

I believe that invitation is here today as we enter a new month.

You’re not too old, too young, too busy, or too messy to ask God to show you one thing you can begin doing today that will help you turn your attention toward Him.

God doesn't need a marker to move in our lives for the better, but I think sometimes I do.

Sometimes I need a clear moment to make a commitment to Him. A commitment not simply to be aware of my mess or my hope, but to respond, to make room for prayer, for His Word, for rest, for obedience, for perspective, and for trust.

The demands around us are tangible, pulling us in varying directions at a rapidly increasing pace. And distractions are everywhere. When the real responsibilities around us finally allow us to come up for air, we can often fill that space with worry. Replaying scenarios in our heads to get ahead. Trying to anticipate every possible outcome so we can be prepared.

Let’s not be too distracted to forget that scripture gives us another way. We can bring our anxieties to God. We can turn our attention toward what is true, honorable, just, pure, lovely, and worthy of praise. We can quiet our minds long enough to remember that God is not asking us to carry tomorrow today.

So what does making space need to look like for you? Where can you tangibly create a little more room to turn your mind and heart toward what is true?

Maybe it's shutting the door to unnecessary worry, putting your phone down, or maybe it's saying no. Maybe it's resting, opening your Bible before opening your notifications. Maybe it's simply sitting quietly before the Lord and remembering that you don't have to solve everything today.

We aren't making space because God is far away and needs an empty place to come fill. He is already here.

We make space because we need to notice Him. We make space to listen, to remember, to receive and to trust. To be renewed by what is true.

He is doing great things in His throne room, and through Christ, we are invited into His presence. So as October begins, perhaps you need a marker. Not a promise that this month will be easier or another list of things to accomplish. Just a moment to stop and say: God, show me where I need to make room for You. Show me what I need to release, what I need to receive, and what You are inviting me to trust You with.

Maybe that’s all we need. A little space. A little space to intentionally look to Him through our actions. Imagine the glory to be given to God in the month ahead if we simply make room to look to Him.

Pace is set by trust.

How much we trust Him sets a pace we can sustain.

How little we trust Him sets a pace of fear, striving, and burnout.

Our pace directly reflects our trust in the Name above every name: Jesus Christ.

Notice I use the word pace here. I chose this word intentionally because, as believers, we are always walking forward, taking the next step. But how are we stepping?

Are we praying, actively watching and witnessing how God is directing our steps before we take the next one? Or are we frantically, tunnel-visioned, walking in our own will and our own way?

Look up. Ask Him. Watch. Keep taking steps—responding to life as it unfolds before you in partnership with the One who works all things together for good.

His glory is actively unfolding around us, and we are invited to bear witness to it if we choose to look up, ask, watch, and step with Him.

Glory to our God, who loves you, advocates for you, and is passionate about co-laboring with you in the life He has given you.

Lord, would we feel Your presence with us today. Would we pause and look for You, communing with You as our day unfolds. Guide our steps, Father. We are listening, watching, and hoping for Your glory to be the marker of our lives. Amen.

“Why are you downcast, O my soul? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior.”
— Psalm 42:5

“For to be sure, he was crucified in weakness, yet he lives by God’s power. Likewise, we are weak in him, yet by God’s power we will live with him to serve you.”
— 2 Corinthians 13:4

“I will refresh the weary and satisfy the faint.”
— Jeremiah 31:25
