Community Connection, May 24: A Pentecost of Connection

This year, Pentecost and Memorial Day happen to fall on the same weekend. While not unheard of, this is unusual enough to spark some curiosity about the connections between the two days. As it turns out, there are many! Both days are about remembrance. Both are about transition. Both have an association with the color red. And both invoke a strong sense of community - Memorial Day the national community, Pentecost the global community of Christians that was born on this day.

Community Connection, May 17: Pets of Desert Mission

Today we shared 19 of Desert Mission’s finest furry friends! That’s right, the pet pictures you’ve all been sending in over the past two weeks were compiled into an adorable slide show that was received with oohs, ahhs, and a great deal of “I forgot to submit a picture of MY pet!” As such, we will continue to gather pictures moving forward, with a second slide show to be shared in June (and perhaps another in July, if there are additional “I forgot”s in June!).

If you haven’t already shared your pet(s), we invite you to submit your picture here: https://forms.gle/FoqCNL9Yr7nRSKca8. You can also share a picture with us via an email sent to Jen or to the church office (from which it will be forwarded to Jen). Include your name, your pet’s name(s) and, if you’d like, a fun fact about them. We encourage you to share more dogs, cats, and rabbits, but we’d also love to see an even wider variety of pets, so as Pastor Michael mentioned today, feel free to submit horses, chickens, goldfish…if you’ve got ‘em, we’d love to see ‘em!

The warm acceptance of pets into the Desert Mission community is part of what makes it so special. We may be halfway through National Pet Month, but let’s continue this celebration of our animal companions in the months to come!

Community Connection, May 10: A Mother’s Day Bouquet

On special days like this, we often explore the history of the day itself. Having already delved into both Mother’s Day and Mothering Day, we thought this year we’d share some of the connections between the month of May itself and the holiday we observe on the second Sunday of the month.

Community Connection, May 3: Let’s Hear it for the Pets!

Today marks the beginning of National Pet Week, which in turn is the first part of National Pet Month. Founded in 1981 by the American Veterinary Medical Association, National Pet Week (and its month-long expansion) highlight the benefits and responsibilities of pet ownership. And seeing as Desert Mission seems to be chock full of animal lovers, this is the perfect time to introduce our pets more fully into the community!
