“A Foundation of Sand”

“…like a foolish man who built his house on the sand.” (Matthew 7:26b, NASB95)

This time next week, many Global Methodist brothers and sisters from around the world will be making their way to Johannesburg for the 2026 General Conference, which begins on August 30th. Many decisions will be made there that will affect the future of our denomination and help shape our emerging movement of scriptural holiness.

Often when we talk about how the church grows, tension arises between those who long to see a movement of the Holy Spirit and those who want an orderly system. As Wesleyans, we shouldn't be averse to either! We have a heritage that was DEEPLY spiritual and SIGNIFICANTLY structured. And it worked out pretty well for those early Methodists.

There is an often-used exchange between George Whitefield and a Methodist preacher named John Pool.

𝐖𝐡𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐟𝐢𝐞𝐥𝐝: Well, John, art thou still a Wesleyan?

𝐏𝐨𝐨𝐥: Yes, sir. I thank God I have the privilege of being in connection with Mr. Wesley, and one of his preachers.

𝐖𝐡𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐟𝐢𝐞𝐥𝐝: John, thou art in thy right place. My brother Wesley acted wisely; the souls awakened under his ministry he joined in class [an ordered system of small groups], thus preserving the fruits of his labor. This I neglected, and my people are a rope of 𝐒𝐚𝐧𝐝.

Notice that the success of our "method" was an emphasis on both revival and organization. We invite our downfall if we neglect either. We serve a great God who brings order out of chaos and dwells within the hearts of his people so that he can make them holy. He is not "either/or"; he is "both/and". Our lives, both individually and corporately, must be built on the firm foundation of the fullness of God. Then when the difficult times arrive, we may find that our house is not built on sand, but on the rock of His Word.

𝐏𝐫𝐚𝐲𝐞𝐫: Lord, we pray that you might build and sustain your church well. May our endeavors be guided by your Holy Spirit, and may we order our lives to grow more and more like you each day.

“When Are You Retiring?”

When I’m asked this question, I usually laugh and reply, “I don’t know how to do that.” My question is this: “Does one, whether clergy or laity, ever really retire from ministry?”

In Numbers 8:23-26, the Lord instructs Moses regarding the service of the Levites, specifying ages of active duty, and the time of their retirement from active service. However, even in retirement, they would support the work of those who were still serving.

In the New Testament, the Apostle Paul wrote letters to both Timothy and Titus, calling Timothy “my true son in the faith”, and Titus “my true son in a common faith”. Later, in Titus 2:1-3, he instructs the older men to “proclaim the things which are fitting for sound doctrine” and the older women to “teach what is good” to the younger generation.

These teachings, from the Old and New Testaments, impress me to believe we should serve the Lord by ministering to His people all the days of our lives, even though our call may take a new direction as we equip the next generation to “pick up the mantle”.

I still remember, and tell the story regularly, the Pastor who gave me the advice “Just be yourself” when I was taking my first appointment. There have been so many pastors and lay persons who have nurtured and encouraged me throughout my ministry, and every one of them makes a difference in my life. Bishop Carolyn Moore has challenged us to “Be watchable” as we mentor others in faith and in leadership.

As Paul was aging and his time growing short, he gave final exhortation to Timothy (2Timothy 4) as he wrote, “For I am already being poured out like a drink offering and the time for my departure is near. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” Friends, let’s not quit too soon. No matter our age, let’s prepare the generation coming after us.

"Tourist or Pilgrim?"

In a short letter to the Christian community in Philippi, the Apostle Paul wrote: “I want to know Christ—yes, to know the power of his resurrection and participation in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, and so, somehow, attaining to the resurrection from the dead. Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already arrived at my goal, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me.” (3:10-12) The compelling goal of his faith journey was to know Christ and fully realize the purpose “for which Christ Jesus took hold of me.”

Have you ever thought about how we approach our faith journey? Eugene Peterson’s book, 𝘈 𝘓𝘰𝘯𝘨 𝘖𝘣𝘦𝘥𝘪𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦 𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘚𝘢𝘮𝘦 𝘋𝘪𝘳𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯, has a great analogy that might help us. Imagine two different ways to travel: as tourists or as pilgrims. Tourists visit Instagram-worthy places and cross off bucket-list goals. In contrast, pilgrims set out on a journey that holds deep meaning for them. For the pilgrim, the journey is a means of transformation.

Consider this: on my faith journey, am I a tourist or a pilgrim? In my journey, do “I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me?”
