“Becoming a Lightning Rod”
Michael Miller, Presiding Elder, North District
Acts 1:8 “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”
I remember that our home’s power recently went out due to lightning strikes. It was an amazing display of power as lightning streaked across the sky, and unfortunately, it was dangerous. Lightning has always fascinated me, perhaps for its sheer brilliance or maybe because of its raw power. I can remember flying into Guatemala on a mission team and seeing lightning strike our plane, yet we were safe. Because of the plane’s lightning rods and certain buffering mechanisms, we were safe.
A lightning rod is also amazing. Amazing in the respect that it is ordinary in every way, just a piece of metal, until it comes in contact with lightning. The everyday piece of metal then becomes something greater; something charged with power. Just like Dr. Luther Oconer reminded us this past weekend at Annual Conference, you and I are much like the lightning rod; we are ordinary until we come in contact with the extraordinary, then life changes. You have the potential to be charged with God and to be transformed by the power of God’s very Holy Spirit. What an opportunity! Will you take advantage and become connected today? The choice and charge are yours.
