St. Thomas African Methodist Episcopal Church

St. Thomas African Methodist Episcopal Church St. Thomas A.M.E. Church is located in Savannah, GA. It is a church in the Savannah South Area, Old Georgia Conference in the 6th Episcopal District. Mr. The Rev.

In the late 1800’s as the city’s southern boundaries were extended, members of St. Philip Monumental A.M.E. Church moved into the Louisville and Ditermus Communities. At the time, it was difficult to attend class meetings and weekly services at the “Mother Church.” The distance and street crimes perpetrated against Negroes made attending night services difficult. Robert “Pa” Jefferson organized

a Prayer House in the back yard at 509 Orchard Street. This band grew, and as they grew, there came the need for a larger meeting place. They raised funds and purchased the property at the corner of West Broad and Orchard Streets (now the middle of West Broad Street). The first edifice was erected there. What had been a Prayer House became a Mission in 1893. It was originally a part of the Blackshear District. Robert Jefferson became the first Pastor.

Memorial Day is a United States federal holiday dedicated to honoring and mourning the U.S. military personnel who died while serving in the Armed Forces.
Originally known as Decoration Day, the holiday was established in 1868 to decorate the graves of fallen Civil War soldiers with flowers and flags. Over time, its purpose expanded to honor all American service members who have died in any war or conflict
