Upaya's annual PLANTING LIFE program is right around the corner!

We invite you to join us next weekend, May 29-31, for this unique and deeply enriching program guided by a renowned team of Indigenous activist-scholars, artists, and Native farmers, including Tewa artist and farmer Roxanne Swentzell, Tewa historian Porter Swentzell, and Mayan archeo-astronomer, farmer, and artist Alonso Méndez, working in close collaboration with master gardener Wendy Johnson, Upaya's Abbot Roshi Joan, and other Upaya Zen Center teachers.

Planting Life is grounded in daily meditation and socially engaged Buddhist perspectives, infused with the dynamic teachings of Native seedways and Traditional Ecological Knowledges.

Upaya's upcoming July Zen Circle is stewarded by Roshi Joan Halifax and Sensei Wendy Dainin Lau. The Calligraphy program will be lead by Sensei Kazuaki Tanahashi and Dr. Bruce Linton. The Kado faculty are Norma Ryoku Kaweloku Wong Roshi with Rosie Wazan Abriam Roshi and Pamela Omidyar. And the Dogen Seminar will be lead by Sensei Kazuaki Tanahashi, Roshi Joan Halifax, Steven Heine PhD, Roshi Norman Fischer, Sensei Sokaku Kathie Fischer, and Roshi Konjin Gaelyn Godwin.

"DOGEN SEMINAR: Inspiration for Everyday Life" is the second stand alone program offered during Upaya's July Zen Circle. This integrative weekend will be an exploration of Zen Master Dogen’s teachings on practice methods, states of meditation, work practice, compassion, service, expression, living fully in each moment, facing death and transcending momentariness and timelessness.

The program will be guided by Roshi Joan Halifax, Sensei Kaz Tanahashi, Steven Heine, Sensei Sokaku Kathie Fischer, Roshi Norman Fischer, Roshi Konjin Gaelyn Godwin, and others.

During July Zen Circle, Upaya will be hosting two deeply engaging stand alone weekend programs.

The first is "CALLIGRAPHY: Painting Bodhidharma in the Spirit of Zenga and Joy", a very special calligraphy program with Sensei Kazuaki Tanahashi and Bruce Linton. Rare Bodhidharma scrolls will be exhibited and while we paint variations of the First Zen Patriarch and create our own unique versions of Bodhidharma. This workshop is for everyone from the very beginner to the most experienced among us.

Before you know it, Upaya's Zen Circle will be upon us!
This enriching July program is a time of retreat, learning, art practice, meditation practice, and the rare opportunity to fully participate with Upaya’s resident community in their daily schedule to taste the beauty and joy of monastery life. Within the Circle are two special weekend programs on calligraphy and the Dogen Seminar with Sensei Kazuaki Tanahashi and an extraordinary faculty. The Circle also includes a demonstration and hands-on workshop of kado (the Way of the Flower) as a Zen practice. The workshop will be conducted by Norma Ryuko Kaweloku Wong Roshi, along with Rosie Wazan Abriam Roshi and Pamela Omidyar. Roshi Joan Halifax, Sensei Wendy Dainin Lau, and Sensei Monshin Nannette Overley are the stewards for this July Zen Circle.
