This morning's service we began our congregational year with the Unitarian Water Ceremony. And it was raining, which is a bit unusual in southern California this time of year. September’s Theme is “Beginnings”
“Beginning” is a big word in our culture. It comes with a lot of pressure. We are expected to be a hero of sorts: Clear about where we are going and courageous enough to get there on our own.
The beautiful life, the enviable journey, is the one that is mapped out from the start and never veers off track.
The wise and widely loved poet Mary Oliver asks us about bold and brave beginnings. “What is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?,” she asks. It’s a question that can sometimes feel more intimidating than invitational.
But what if we began our journeys differently? What if we allowed ourselves to start off with humility, not heroism? With our doubts rather than our certainty? What if it was ok for us to say out loud: “I’m not sure where I’m going? And I’m not sure I can get there on my own?”

Main Street Newhall: A Community Loss
We at Unitarian Universalists of Santa Clarita Valley are deeply saddened by the fire that has destroyed a beloved part of Main Street Newhall.
Main Street is more than a collection of buildings and businesses. It is part of the heart of our community—a place where people gather, celebrate, create memories, and feel connected to one another.
Our hearts are with the business owners, employees, neighbors, and everyone affected by this devastating loss. We are grateful to the firefighters and first responders who worked to protect our community.

As Newhall begins to recover, we stand with our neighbors in sadness, support, and hope for what comes next.
