“Whoever eats this bread will live forever.” John 6:58
This is a hard saying even today. How deeply the Jews must have struggled when Jesus told them that his flesh and blood are true food and drink that give eternal life. Many of his followers turned away after hearing this. Yet Jesus, who knew their hearts, did not soften his words or call them back with an easier teaching. Instead, he spoke with divine clarity: “The words I have spoken to you are spirit and life” (John 6:63). In every Mass, the Eucharist—the Body and Blood of Christ—becomes for us the gift of eternal life. Lord, give me the grace never to turn away from you, but to remain faithful to you in your Church.
Do we give our flesh to Jesus as he gives his flesh to us? He calls us to deny ourselves, take up our cross, and follow in his footsteps. Our deepest desire must be to do the will of God, not to cling to our own plans, dreams, or desires. This, too, is a hard saying. Lord, teach me to surrender myself to you with trust, to love your will above my own, and to follow you faithfully wherever you lead.
