Why are members in The Church of Jesus Christ called "Sister" or "Brother?"

We are all part of the family of God and "affectioned to one another with brotherly love" (Romans 12:10). Jesus taught "Whosoever shall do the will of My Father which is in Heaven, the same is My brother, and sister" (Matthew 12:50, Mark 3:35). If Jesus was willing to call His followers brothers and sisters, then we want to do the same to each other.

"And now, because of the covenant which ye have made ye shall be called the children of Christ, his sons, and his daughters; for behold, this day he hath spiritually begotten you; for ye say that your hearts are changed through faith on his name; therefore, ye are born of him and have become his sons and daughters." (Mosiah 5:7)

DEACONESSES
The Gracious Uplifters. Deaconesses are an army of encouragers, comforters, and supporters, offering compassion, guidance, and love to women in need.

Women are ordained as deaconesses in The Church of Jesus Christ. This is not a secondary or “support” role — it is a distinct ordained office with specific responsibilities and spiritual authority, conferred through the laying on of hands just as all other ordinations are and is the female parallel to a Deacon.

The scriptural basis is clear. Paul commended Phoebe: “I commend unto you Phebe our sister, which is a servant of the church which is at Cenchrea” (Romans 16:1). The Greek word translated “servant” is diakonos — the same word used for male deacons. Phoebe was not merely a helpful church member. She was a deaconess of the church at Cenchrea, commended by an apostle, and entrusted with carrying Paul’s letter to the Romans — one of the most important documents in Christian history.

Other women served in similar capacities in the early church. Paul mentions Priscilla and Aquila, who labored with him in ministry (Romans 16:3; Acts 18:26), and Euodias and Syntyche, whom he described as women who “laboured with me in the gospel” (Philippians 4:2–3).

Deaconesses in The Church of Jesus Christ are ordained by the laying on of hands, prepare and assist in serving communion, visit the sick and pray for them, care for families in distress, and organize women’s outreach and service.

Scripture bears witness that women are filled with the Holy Ghost, prophesy, teach, and serve in God’s power (Joel 2:28–29; Acts 2:17–18; Acts 21:9). The Church of Jesus Christ honors this reality by ordaining women to genuine responsibility within the body.

They serve without financial compensation.

“IF YOU’RE PART OF A FRAUD, THIS IS THE MOMENT WHEN YOU EXPOSE THE FALSEHOOD... HEY, I REALLY WAS PART OF A CONSPIRACY.” (Brother Jared interviews Brother Josh)

“At one point, David Whitmer, an incredible witness of the Golden plates, is taken out with a group of saints, left in the middle of the square of town at that time—bayonets pointed at their heads—and he's directly asked to reject the Book of Mormon. The Spirit of God enters into him, and he begins to preach the truth of what he knows. Remember, for him it's not a belief—he saw with his own eyes, and he began to preach the truth of the golden plates and the Book of Mormon. So much so that it dismantled the people that were there with bayonets. They actually broke up. The mob broke up. We have witnesses that are enduring amazing persecution.

"The saddest bit of persecution that they had was the fact that in their lifetime, many of those witnesses felt Joseph Smith was falling away, disagreed with him about doctrines and practices within the church, and were excommunicated. Now, if you're part of a fraud, this is the moment when you expose the falsehood. In Independence, Oliver Cowdery and others are kicked out through a manifesto that threatens their lives, and church members are robbing their homes at this point. This is the moment when you say: Hey, I really was part of a conspiracy. This wasn't true.

"The founding shepherds are kicked out; their lives are threatened by the very church that they helped organize. And instead of rejecting The Book of Mormon, they continue to say: Well, Joseph might have gone into falsehood—while this might be in error, well, that might be in error, one thing I know is true: The Book of Mormon is the word of God, was given as a gift by God, and came forth by the gift and power of God, and I saw the golden plates for myself. And the rest of their lives, they gave living testimonies of the truth of The Book of Mormon. Every witness that doesn't have the last name Smith gets excommunicated, and none of them… none of them… give up the faith regarding the Book of Mormon.”

ONE OR TWO PRIESTHOODS?
What Priesthood Order Does The Church of Jesus Christ Uphold?

The priesthood of Jesus Christ was restored back to the earth on May 15, 1829. That fateful day, an angel laid his hands upon Joseph Smith and Oliver Cowdery and proclaimed, “Upon you my fellow servants, in the name of Messiah I confer this priesthood and this authority, which shall remain upon earth, that the sons of Levi may yet offer an offering unto the Lord in righteousness!” This fulfilled prophecy given in Revelation 14:6 which foretold an angel would, “… fly in the midst of heaven, having the everlasting gospel to preach unto them that dwell on the earth, and to every nation, and kindred, and tongue, and people”.

The Apostle John saw a future day when the everlasting gospel would be brought back to earth under the power of an angel sent by Jesus Christ. This predicts a time when the priesthood of Jesus Christ would not be present upon the earth, but nowhere in the Bible or Book of Mormon do two priesthoods explicitly exist in tandem at the same time. We believe there was only one priesthood, an everlasting priesthood. The angel witnessed by Joseph and Oliver confirmed the priesthood in the name of the Messiah, Jesus Christ. It was the Lord’s priesthood at the earliest moments of the restoration.

I would that ye should remember that the Lord God ordained priests, after his holy order, which was after the order of his Son…those priests were ordained after the order of his Son, in a manner that thereby the people might know in what manner to look forward to his Son for redemption. (Alma 13:1-2)

We had a blessed Sunday Service yesterday. Full of music, testimony, prayer, and preaching. We took the Lord's Supper and enjoyed fellowship with each other. Naturally some of the kids went down one of the slides at the Ninja Gym we meet at, and we grilled Tacos at a park afterwards. If you live in Utah, or happen to visit over a weekend, we hope you join with us!

Are we 'Bickertonites?'

The Church of Jesus Christ is sometimes referred to as “Bickertonites” by those familiar with the restoration movement to differentiate us from other restoration groups that emerged after the assassination of Joseph Smith Jr. on June 27, 1844.

Although we acknowledge the clarity this term provides, we prefer to be known by our official name: The Church of Jesus Christ, adding “Headquartered in Monongahela, PA” to differentiate us from other restoration groups.

To learn more about our Church’s history and leadership, read William Bickerton’s testimony. This account shares his personal story of joining and leading the Church.

Does The Church of Jesus Christ use the Doctrine and Covenants? We dont. Why not? Check out our in-depth arcticle at:

https://thegospelrestored.org/do-you-accept-the-doctrine-and-covenants-dc-scripture/

A couple short reasons are:

1) Several doctrines originate in the D&C that are not found in, or are specifically contradicted by the Bible and Book of Mormon.

2) Many revelations were changed multuple times over a number of years. Including expansions and contractions without a vote.

3) Joseph Smith admitted not all revelations come from God.

4) We believe the fulness of Christ's gospel, everything needed for salvation is plainly taught in the Bible and Book of Mormon
