Happy 100th Birthday, Mary Durkin!

Sunday at our 12:00 Noon Mass, the Church of the Assumption community gathered to celebrate a truly remarkable milestone as longtime parishioner Mary Durkin marked her 100th birthday.
Surrounded by her loving family, Mary received a special blessing from Father John as parishioners joined in giving thanks for a century of faith, family, service, and devotion.

Mary's story is deeply woven into the history of Assumption Parish. After moving to San Leandro from upstate New York, Mary married her husband, Dr. Jim Durkin, after the two met at a dance at the University of San Francisco. Together they built a life centered on faith, family, and service. “Doc Durkin” cared for generations of families in the community through his optometrist practice, while Mary devoted herself to raising their four children—Jim, Coleen, Ann, and Katie—and serving both parish and school.

For decades, Mary was an active and dedicated parishioner. She served as President of the Mother's Club, was involved in the Confraternity of the Holy Rosary, and helped establish a faith-sharing discussion group that fostered lasting friendships among parish families. Mary and Jim generously supported parish and school activities, helping strengthen the close-knit community that has long been a hallmark of Assumption Parish.

As we celebrate Assumption's 75th Anniversary, we are especially grateful for faithful parishioners like Mary whose lives and witness have enriched our parish through the decades. Her example reminds us that the strength of our parish comes from generations of people who have dedicated themselves to God, family, and community.

Please join us in wishing Mary Durkin a very happy 100th birthday and thanking God for the many blessings she has shared with our parish family throughout the years.

Last Day of School Mass - Third Grade Choir
As summer begins, we wish all of our students, families, teachers, and staff a safe, joyful, and faith-filled break. May this season be filled with opportunities for rest, adventure, family time, and making wonderful memories.

Today, we celebrate the Memorial of Saint Barnabas, Apostle, whose life reminds us of the importance of encouragement, generosity, and sharing the Good News with others.

We also give thanks for our Third Grade Choir, who will help lead us in worship at our Last Day of School Mass. Thank you for sharing your gifts and helping make our celebration so special.

Have a wonderful summer, and we look forward to seeing you at our Sunday Masses throughout the season!

🍒💙 What a wonderful morning at the San Leandro Cherry Parade! 💙🍒

The Church and School of the Assumption were proud to celebrate our 75th Anniversary alongside the San Leandro community. From the smiles along the parade route to the incredible energy of our Assumption family, it was a day filled with faith, fellowship, and community spirit.

A heartfelt thank you to our students, cheerleaders, CYO athletes, parents, parishioners, alumni, and ministry members who walked, waved, cheered, and proudly represented Assumption. We’ve got spirit, yes we do! 💙

Special thanks to Liz Di Giacomo for organizing the school float and helping make our presence in the parade so memorable. We are also grateful to our Principal, Lana Rocheford, for her support and dedication to our school community.

Thank you to Fr. John for his leadership and encouragement, and to the St. Joseph Ministry and the Knights of Columbus for carrying the beautiful Statue of Our Lady of Fatima during the parade.

We are especially grateful to the Rosary Makers Ministry, whose dedicated members created hundreds of rosaries that we were blessed to distribute along with Assumption prayer cards. Thank you also to the Divine Mercy Ministry for helping us share our faith and mission with the community.

At Assumption, we are always one community—parish, school, ministries, families, and friends—united in faith and committed to serving others.

The celebration continues! Stop by the Assumption booth at the Cherry Festival—we'll be there until 6:00 PM. We'd love to see you!

A special thank you to the City of San Leandro for continuing this cherished tradition and bringing our community together year after year.

🍒 Cheers to Cherries! 🍒
