The Westminster Larger Catechism asks, “Is there any use of the moral law to mankind since the fall?” The answer is, “Although no person, since the fall, can attain to righteousness and life by the moral law, yet there is great use of it, in a way common to all people, and also as it particula...

Question 92 of the Westminster Larger Catechism talked about the importance of the moral law that was given to Adam. But this brings up an important follow-up question: “What is the moral law?” This is what question 93 asks. It answers by saying: “The moral law is the declaration of the will o...

What rule did God give Adam for his obedience?

Westminster Larger Catechism Q92 takes us back to the beginning, before sin entered the world, to see that mankind was created by God, for God, and under God’s good authority. Adam was not left to define good and evil for himself. He was given the moral law, written on his heart, along with the special command not to eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.

This matters because obedience is not opposed to human joy. We were created to glorify God and enjoy him forever. God’s rule of obedience is not a prison, but the good order of life under our Creator.

And because Adam failed, this question also points us to Christ—the last Adam—who obeyed perfectly, bore the curse for lawbreakers, and gives life to all who trust in him.

In the previous question, the Westminster Larger Catechism taught us that “the duty that God requires of mankind is obedience to his revealed will.” That answer naturally leads to the next question: What did God first reveal as the rule by which mankind was to obey him? Question 92 asks, “What...

Some passages of Scripture are difficult. They may raise hard questions, stretch our understanding, or force us to slow down and think carefully. But difficult passages are not passages to avoid.

Christians are called to wrestle with the Word of God faithfully—humbly, prayerfully, and with confidence that all Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for His people.

When we come to a difficult text, we do not need to explain it away, rush past it, or pretend the questions are not there. Instead, we should bring those questions under the authority of Scripture, trusting that God has given us His Word for our good.

This video encourages us to approach difficult passages with faith, patience, and reverence.
