**Maybe the hardest part of following Jesus is realizing God isn't building the kingdom we expected.**

The people in Jesus' day were waiting for God to act. They had a pretty good idea of what that would look like.

Power. Victory. A king on a warhorse.

Instead, Jesus showed up riding a donkey.

As Kylie Jones-Greenwood says in their July 5 sermon:

“It is remarkably difficult to recognize God's kingdom when we are looking for our own.”

Oof.

What if we're sometimes so busy looking for God to confirm what *we* already believe that we miss what God is actually doing?

That's the kind of question we love exploring at Mount Tabor.

Not easy answers.
Not pretending we have it all figured out.
But a community learning to recognize God's kingdom together.

**What if admitting we got it wrong is actually an act of hope?**

That’s the surprising idea at the heart of this moment from Kylie Jones-Greenwood’s sermon.

Paul says, “I do not do the good I want.”

And Kylie reminds us that before grace heals us, it teaches us to tell the truth.

That doesn't sound very glamorous. But maybe it's liberating.

We don't have to pretend we're perfect. We don't have to pretend our communities are perfect. We don't have to pretend our history is simple.

**Repentance says: this is broken—and I still believe God can redeem it.**

That’s hope.

**What if we put down the things that keep us from listening?**

Fear. Certainty. The stories we’ve been taught about ourselves. The need to protect our own version of the truth.

In her July 5 sermon at Mount Tabor Lutheran Church, Kylie Jones-Greenwood asks us to consider what happens when we’re willing to lay those things down, and make room for something bigger.

“We can lay down fear that keeps us from learning, and certainty that keeps us from listening.”

That feels like a pretty important invitation right now.

At Mount Tabor, we believe faith gives us room to ask hard questions, tell the truth, listen to one another, and keep moving toward the kingdom of God.
