Saint James Episcopal Church

Saint James Episcopal Church St. James is an historic Episcopal church on the North Shore of LI. Worship and prayer are at the cen Like most churches, St James has a wide range of members.

On any given Sunday you will find kids, parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles, single people and married couples. We include educators, contractors, engineers, nurses, schoolkids, artists, homemakers, doctoral students, retirees and administrators. We come from St James, Smithtown, Stony Brook, Nesconset, Hauppauge, Setauket, Commack, Centereach and further afield. Some of us have lived on Long

island our whole lives; others (including the Rector) are newcomers to the area; some are cradle Episcopalians and others have joined us from other denominations. What brings us together is our desire to worship God, and at the core of our life together is our Sunday morning worship, with its focus on preaching, music and the Eucharist. We enjoy one another's company, whether it's at a social event, a fundraiser, teaching Sunday School, caring for a parishioner in need, participating in committees, working in the Smithtown Food Pantry, in the gardens, or, of course, at coffee hour!

Pastor Danny Lybarger is gaining attention online after sharing powerful remarks about LGBTQ+ Christians in his church, saying they display “some of the greatest fruit of the Spirit” he has ever witnessed.

The founding pastor of The Well United Methodist Church in Missouri said q***r believers in his congregation serve at every level of leadership and consistently live out values like love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.

According to Pastor Lybarger, many LGBTQ+ members are deeply committed to scripture, build strong families, and dedicate their lives to serving others through ministry and community leadership. He pointed to Galatians chapter 5, saying their daily lives reflect the very qualities the Bible describes as the fruit of the Spirit.

His comments have sparked widespread conversation online as more churches continue debating LGBTQ+ inclusion within Christianity. Supporters praised his message as compassionate and Christ-centered, while others discussed the balance between traditional beliefs and modern inclusion.

Pastor Lybarger’s church has become part of a growing movement of faith communities welcoming believers from all backgrounds while encouraging spiritual growth, healing, and belonging. Many members say the environment has helped them feel seen, accepted, and closer to their faith.
