On this day, May 28, in 1830, President Andrew Jackson signed the Indian Removal Act into law. This act stripped ownership from Native Americans of their eastern lands, transferring it into the hands of white settlers. Approximately 100,000 people were forcibly relocated to reservations west of the Mississippi River, to land that had been deemed worthless by the settlers. Between 13,000 – 16,000 Native Americans died of disease, exposure, or starvation while being forced, on foot, more than a thousand miles from their ancestral homes in what would become known as the “Trail of Tears”.

The legacy of the Indian Removal Act lives on in the present-day borders of Native American nations, as well as in the generational memories of the intense suffering, death, and deprivation experienced during this forced removal. We encourage you to take a moment today to pray for healing, for reconciliation, and for the wisdom to continually learn from our history.

There is just over one week left to sign up for Sierra Service Project – a week-long youth trip full of opportunities to grow, travel, and gain experience in serving communities. All teens, from those entering high school to recently graduated, are welcomed and encouraged to sign up. Thanks to generous funding from the Board of Trustees, we are able to subsidize participation costs and guarantee that no teen will pay more than $500 to register.

This year, participants have the option to serve in either the sweeping southwestern plateaus of Navajo Nation or the rugged northern coastline of Del Norte County. Both locations offer a rich experience for youth who are interested in experiencing a new type of community landscape and service experience. There are plenty of open spots left in both locations – go to https://www.norcalepiscopal.org/site/camps/ for instructions on how to sign up!

The Episcopal Diocese of Northern California reflects with grief on the news that is unfolding about the tragic shooting that took place on Monday, May 18, at the Islamic Center of San Diego. This crime speaks to a worrying trend of radicalization and violence in our country – one that can only be countered by a fierce and uncompromising dedication to love, peace, and unity. As Christians and as humans, it is during times like these that we are called to show up in our communities and demonstrate these values everywhere that we can.

The outpouring of support that the Islamic Center of San Diego has seen from their neighbors since the attack is a mark of hope emerging from within these dark days. We pray that this support will continue to strengthen and build over the coming weeks. We continue to pray for the peaceful repose of the three innocent victims whose lives were taken, for healing and peace for their loved ones, and for strength and unity in the broader San Diego community. Please join us in offering up these prayers.

O God, you have bound us together in a common life. Help us,
in the midst of our struggles for justice and truth, to confront
one another without hatred or bitterness, and to work
together with mutual forbearance and respect; through Jesus
Christ our Lord. 𝐴𝑚𝑒𝑛. (BCP 824)

May 17 is the Episcopal feast day of Thurgood Marshall, the Supreme Court’s first African-American justice and one of the most prolific civil rights advocates in United States history.

Thurgood Marshall was appointed to the Supreme Court in 1967 after having spent decades molding the legal landscape in support of equal rights. In 𝑀𝑢𝑟𝑟𝑎𝑦 𝑣. 𝑃𝑒𝑎𝑟𝑠𝑜𝑛, one of his first prominent cases in 1935, he successfully argued for the admittance of a Black student to the all-white University of Maryland Law School – the same school that had previously denied Marshall himself an education. Marshall went on to spend years building a comprehensive legal strategy against racial segregation in schools, culminating in his arguments before the Supreme Court in 𝐵𝑟𝑜𝑤𝑛 𝑣. 𝐵𝑜𝑎𝑟𝑑 𝑜𝑓 𝐸𝑑𝑢𝑐𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛.

Thurgood Marshall served on the Supreme Court for 24 years and became known as a pragmatic legal realist, emphasizing individual rights, fundamental fairness, and the role of the Constitution as the protector of rights and privileges. As both a lawyer and a justice, he is remembered for having built and defended the critical legal foundations of the Civil Rights Movement.
