"The World of the New Testament" study continues with an introduction to the Gospels. In 70AD the Romans sacked Jerusalem and destroyed the Temple. It was a traumatic moment for both Jews and Christians. For the fledgling Jesus Movement, there was a real crisis of faith as the Temple played a major role in how they believed Jesus would return. So there were a lot of questions: did we do something wrong? Why would God allow this to happen? The author of the Gospel of Mark sought to answer many of these questions when he sat down one day and wrote, "The beginning of the good news of Jesus Christ, the Son of God." Last Sunday's sermon has been posted on YouTube! The “Ten Words,” better known as the Ten Commandments, come up from time to time in culture and the political sphere. Every now and then, a fight breaks out about whether or not we should post them in our courthouses and schools. Yet, in a recent poll, while 70% of Americans can name the major characters of the TV show The Simpsons, less than 10% of them could name all ten of the Commandments! It seems that though many understand that these words are important, only a small percentage actually know what they are really all about. This Sunday, Dr. Kelly Pigott will share some of the wonderful wisdom found in these “Words,” and why they are still deeply relevant thousands of years after they were written down.

Coming this Sunday, October 11th! At any given moment, a running narrative plays through your mind—a constant chattering. Most of it is benign, consisting of current tasks or plans for dinner. But sometimes your mind obsesses about memories from the past. Or it fixates on a current confrontation that made you angry. And sometimes it hounds you with noise about how inept or unworthy you are. In “You Are What You Think,” Dr. Kelly Pigott explores how to cultivate a healthy thought-life that brings out the best version of yourself.
