We celebrated Pentecost on Wednesday! It’s the churchy holiday 50 days after Easter celebrating the gift of the Holy Spirit and the birth of God’s church.

We listened to the story in Acts 2 and talked about neighboring through the lens of the beginnings of the early church and how they continued the work of Jesus. Here are some things we talked about with that story:

1) Who we are as people of faith cannot be pulled apart from the diverse community who received the Spirit and were able to understand each other.

2) Who we are as people of faith cannot be pulled apart from the community organized to take care of their neighbors, living out the gospel tangibly–feeding people and sharing what they had so that all could thrive.

3) Who we are as people of faith cannot be pulled apart from Jesus’ death and resurrection—the ultmate defeat of unjust law.

There are a lot of ways the power of the Holy Spirit helps us be better neighbors, but how cool to think about the power knowing our neighbors brings to our understanding, our organizing for change, and our ability to defeat unjust laws.

One way we get to be a part of that power is voting for our neighbors’ well being! Meaghan and Diane walked us through how to get registered and key deadlines, because the reality is that we might not know all of our neighbors, but we already share infrastructure and policy and can work for their good.

“We had little choice” is not a valid response in the face of evil. So called conversion therapy is an oppressive and harmful expression of a faith we do not recognize! Q***r folks - we are BELOVED and who we are is a gift from God. If you need an extra chat with this news, send a message. You are not alone! Our stories and dignity are everything! 🏳️‍⚧️🏳️‍🌈 ***rjoyisholy

City Council members on Thursday repealed a ban on the controversial practice that was first approved in 2019. The split decision comes after a group of Christian counselors and Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey sued the city.

Has there been a neighbor in your life who has shown you radical hospitality? Have you felt the presence of God through a neighbor?

Tonight Rev. Carter Ellis shared with us a powerful message and testimony about how we can be different people because of the intentionality of neighboring that God calls us to.

We do a thing called sacred witnessing at Roots where people can respond to the message by answering reflection questions. Those first two in this post were ours tonight. Story after story of neighbors who have made a difference.

Maybe you’re already that for someone else.
Maybe you’re hoping for and needing that right now.

Keep feeling that Spirit nudge and find ways to keep meeting the people around you. Let God surprise you!

We had a blast yesterday with Touch Grass meeting at City Market and walking the river trail!

We passed this mural: “Nature called. Bring a friend.” There is something really special about experiencing God’s creation in community. The conversations about the river and how green everything is. But we also talked a lot about the design of the city—transportation, accessibility, and development.

Without that walk, would we have talked about any of it? Probably not.

That’s the magic of community. Some of us might say it’s God’s Spirit bringing us together. Some might call it something else. Whatever it is, we hope you have a community of people in your life who help you talk about big things and small things, God things and human things together.
