The Possession | Acts 4:32-5:11
This Sunday’s passage starts out great. The Church had become a spiritual utopia experiencing a level of community not known to fallen humanity. No one within the Church had any unmet material needs and those with the means gave cheerfully and sacrificially to keep it that way. But then…
A husband and wife did something that directly undermined the unity and unselfishness that had come to characterize the Church. Peter says that in their effort to deceive people they have really lied to God. First the husband drops dead in church and then the wife drops dead just a few hours later.
Why did this happen? What is this story supposed to teach us? We will look at three lessons we should take away from these events. “All Scripture is inspired by God and is profitable for teaching, for rebuking, for correcting, for training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.” (2 Timothy 3:16, CSB) Let’s equip ourselves to live out our calling as the people of God by paying attention to what God has to say through this account.

The Persecution - Acts 4:1-31
Summary:
If you were Peter and John in the afterglow of Pentecost, during a time of peace and favor with the people, you might expect healing a 40-year-old who had never walked to be a good thing that would draw more appreciation. We don’t know if they were surprised or not, but the response to the healing that was given by the “beautiful” gate involved an arrest and not applause.
Why did healing a man so he could walk create such hostility? As is often the case, it was a question of power. The message of the Gospel is that human beings are broken and dead in their sin. We don’t have the power. All power belongs to God. This is offensive to a world where we want to be our own gods.
By repenting of sin and putting our faith in Christ, every Christian has chosen a side – the Lord’s side. The consequence is that much of this world will hate us because it hates Jesus. We cannot fight by our own strength and wisdom. We do not fight as the world does – with hate and fear. We need the Holy Spirit. Only those who have been with Jesus have been transformed and have the spiritual power to win the victory.
