As we continued Sunday our “Jesus Goes To The Movies” series, there are so many movies that are filled with biblical truths. The 2003 film Secondhand Lions, is no exception. It is a dramatic story filled with truths that run parallel to scripture.

In this movie a young boy is able to escape a very toxic home life by spending a summer with his two uncles. These two men have been well seasoned by life and often tell the young boy stories about their adventures. At one point he becomes conflicted and confronts one uncle if these are all just tall tales or real. The uncle challenges his challenge by saying that he’s given him something to believe in.

One of the big lessons that transfers to the Bible is, we become who we follow. As Pastor Cody further pointed out in his message, “People don’t become what they’re told. They become what they see.”

“Timothy, my dear son, be strong through the grace that God gives you in Christ Jesus. You have heard me teach things that have been confirmed by many reliable witnesses. Now teach these truths to other trustworthy people who will be able to pass them on to others.”

The Apostle Paul took a young Timothy under his wing. Not only did he instruct Timothy, he modeled what Timothy should aspire to become. 1 Corinthians 11:1 says, “And you should imitate me, just as I imitate Christ.”
Many people talk the talk and are quick to tell others what to do, but the strongest influence comes through actions. In the movie the modeling of his uncles shaped his life and changed the trajectory of it. So much so that a once unstable boy returns as an established man after their passing.

The life we lead matters. So ask yourself these questions:

Who are you following?
What voices are shaping your identity?
If someone followed your life for one year, would they look more like Jesus?
