Yesterday Pastor Cody wrapped up our deeper dive into the book of Ephesians. Fittingly it was on the armor of God. With spiritual arrows flying everywhere, it’s incredibly important we have our armor on. But first, we must understand what each piece is and more importantly, where to start.
“Put on all of God’s armor so that you will be able to stand firm against all strategies of the devil. For we are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places.”
Ephesians 6:11-12 NLT
These verses make us aware that there’s a real enemy out to see us fail. There are powers and principalities working in opposition to the things of God. As believers in Jesus, that places us immediately within that opposition. Nevertheless, there’s good news! Jesus already did the heavy lifting! Although there is a present battle, the war’s already been won! Our part is to operate within the winning strategy God’s given us. That is using the full armor of God.
The Bible regularly uses practical imagery to relay spiritual concepts. The first piece of armor is the belt of truth. In the time this was written, Rome was in power. A fierce Roman warrior’s armor started with their belt. It was the anchor to hold their sword and other important weaponry. Truth is our anchor. Without a foundation of truth we are easily swayed and easily deceived. Instead of standing strong, we are blown around with by the winds of opinions, feel good theology, and complacency. A believers first stance against the devil is to know the truth of God’s word. It allows us to easily spot deception and come against it.
Moreover if we are not regularly in the word, we will be less effective in the kingdom. The devil will take advantage of our busy schedules, preoccupation with our phones, and other things to take our eyes off our assignments. If we’ve already committed our lives to Jesus, our eternal destination is sealed. However he will find ways to distract and preoccupy us, making our earthly assignment less effective. We have to stay vigilant against his schemes.
