"And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise." (Deuteronomy 6:6-7)
For many, the month of September means an end to summer vacation with a return to school and to the formal process of learning. After graduation, we begin to realize that there is a lot we didn’t learn in school and we need to educate ourselves continually throughout our lives. The Bible supports this truth. Education is to be an ongoing process at all times and in all places. And, of course, it is to be spiritual education. The three Rs, Reading, ‘riting, and ‘rithmetic, are not enough. We need to learn about human nature and about God’s love for us and his plan for our redemption. We need to know the commandments of the Lord, and how our true happiness comes with obedience. As we learn these lessons, we come to love the Lord our God with all our heart, and soul, and strength and to love our neighbor as ourself. Parents are responsible for teaching these lessons to their children, and all of us, adults and children alike, are to talk of these things as we go about our daily activities. Let us commit ourselves to a lifetime of learning about the truly important things in life.
