We have sinned and done wrong. We have brought guilt on ourselves and rebelled, ignoring your commands and your laws. (Daniel 9:5 (CEB))

Assurance of Pardon:
Hear the good news:
The God who exists in perfect love and eternal communion does not abandon us in our brokenness.
Through Jesus Christ, we are forgiven, through the Holy Spirit, we are renewed, and by God’s grace, we are drawn back into fellowship with God and one another. In Christ, we are reconciled, restored, and made new.
Thanks be to God.
Amen.

“God in three persons, blessed Trinity!”

One of my favorite hymns is “Holy, Holy, Holy! Lord God Almighty!” — the hymn from which that line comes. We’ll be singing it this coming Sunday in celebration of Trinity Sunday.

Ah, Trinity Sunday. I’ll be honest with you: it’s not always my favorite Sunday. Sometimes, when I read that line out loud, I think there’s just a tiny bit of sarcasm in the way I pronounce “blessed.” May God forgive me.
The Trinity is a difficult theological concept even for well-read Christians and biblical scholars. The word “Trinity” doesn’t appear anywhere in Scripture. And frankly, it’s bad math. 1 + 1 + 1 = 1? Huh?

This Sunday, I don’t want us to struggle to make the Trinity fit neatly inside our minds. Instead, I want us to listen to the story the Trinity tells us about who God is and what God does.

God is Creator — God the Father.
God is Redeemer — God the Son.
God is Sustainer — God the Spirit.

And ultimately, what I invite you to remember about the Trinity is this: from the very beginning, God’s nature has been love — a love so full and overflowing that it inspired the creation of everything.

God in three persons, blessed Trinity!

The scriptures for this week are: Genesis 1:1-5, 26-27, 31 and John 1:1-5, 14.

And today, that Spirit is still with us. Jesus said in the Gospel of John 14:16-17, “I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, to be with you forever. This is the Spirit of truth.”

These words have been fulfilled.

We are not left alone. We are not left unplugged.

When we see our own “Low Battery” notification, we have ways to recharge right at our fingertips – prayer, reading the Bible, talking to another brother or sister in Christ, all sorts of ways.

We are not asked to carry the Gospel by our own strength.

The Spirit of God breathes life into each of us. And empowers us, not only for our own personal faith.

For more.

For His work. For the continuation of what Jesus started 2000 years ago.

We have work to do in the world, my friends. The world needs desperately the love, the peace, the shalom that God offers.
We are the body of Christ. We are the hands and feet of God in our here and now.

And God, through the Holy Spirit, powers us up to bring his
Kingdom here on earth, just as it is in heaven.

Thanks be to God! And let us POWER UP!

Assurance of Pardon:
God does not leave us closed in and shut down.
The Spirit of God still moves through locked rooms, still breathes new life into weary hearts, still opens what fear has closed.
In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven.
The windows are opened wide.
Grace blows through our lives again.
Receive the fresh wind of the Holy Spirit, and walk in the freedom and newness of God’s love. Amen.

Why confess?
In Reformed theology, we recognize both our unrighteousness in the light of God's glory and God's sovereignty and mercy. These are central tenets to us.

In our worship, we have three essential "segments" - the Approach to God, the Word of God, and the Response to God.

In our approach to God, it's important to recognize and admit to our standing - that we are in the state of sin. And it's important to do so in the knowledge and and trust that, God, being faithful and just, will forgive us. The worship service really is illustrative of the transformation God makes in us - we come to God in honesty and in confession, we are fed by the Word of God (and by the bread and body of Christ during communion), which changes us, and we then rejoice in God through the Response to God.

Confession is vital to that process, because if we don't come to God in honesty, how can we expect to receive God's grace?

Heavenly Father, today we remember the fallen heroes who gave their lives in service to our country. We thank You for their courage, their sacrifice, and the freedom their service helped protect. Comfort the families who still feel their absence. Let their memory never fade from our hearts. Teach us to live with gratitude, peace, and responsibility. May we honor them not only with words, but with lives that seek justice, kindness, and unity. Amen

Psalm 116:15 (NIV) Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his faithful servants.

Two of our church members led some of our Sunday School aged children in honoring the veterans buried in Clover Hill by replacing the flags of those veterans who lie in our church’s cemetery. Pictures of some of these flags are included in this post.

The words pente kost are Greek for “fiftieth day.” We think of Pentecost as the birthday of the church, but to Greek-speaking Jews, Pente Kost was a feast – the Feast of the Weeks. It happened fifty days after Passover. On this day, Jews brought the first fruits of the wheat harvest to the Temple to thank the Lord for it. It was associated by the Jews with the covenant made with Abraham and then with Moses. Second-century Jews also regarded it as the day the law was given to the Israelites on Mt. Sinai. On the day of Pentecost in the book of Acts, God is again giving to his people.

On Pentecost, fifty days after Easter, we celebrate the gift of the Holy Spirit. Pentecost is about God fulfilling promises he’s made to us through Jesus – the promise of God’s continued presence with us through the Advocate who will be with us forever and teach us everything (see John 14:16-17, 26). Though Jesus has ascended and so God is no longer physically with us, beginning with that first Pentecost we have been blessed with the Spirit of Truth. That Spirit empowered the first disciples to form the church and build it. And that Spirit likewise empowers us today to do God’s work in continuing to build the church as God’s mission of restoration.

One of my favorite theologians describes Pentecost this way, “…through the spirit, some of the creative power of God himself comes from heaven to earth and does its work there.”

So join us on Sunday – and if you can, in honor of the Holy Spirit and the fire which comes with it, wear red!

Food for thought: Are you more inclined to believe in coincidences or the Holy Spirit?

The scriptures for this week are: Acts 2:1-12 and1 Corinthians 12:3b-13.

"Still Waters (Psalm 23)” : Leanna Crawford www.azlyrics.com/l/leannacrawford.html
Great Aunt Maurine said at a hundred and three
Write scripture on your heart for when you need it
Cause anxiety hates Psalm 23
So just say it to yourself 'til you believe it
And I'm feeling like I'm needing it right now

The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want
He leads me by still waters 'til my fears are gone
Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death
O I know You are with me
My father, my friend
Your goodness and mercy will follow me all of my days
I know by Your still waters I'm safe

Lord I believe You can set me at ease
Turn this broken piece in me to peace and quiet
I know there's power in Your word
So I'll say it over and over til my soul's reminded

Deuteronomy 11:18-21 (NRSVUE): “You shall put these words of mine in your heart and soul, and you shall bind them as a sign on your hand and fix them as an emblem on your forehead. Teach them to your children, talking about them when you are at home and when you are away, when you lie down and when you rise up. Write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates, so that your days and the days of your children may be multiplied in the land that the Lord swore to your ancestors to give them, as long as the heavens are above the earth.

Why we confess:
Corporate confession, such as that which we do through saying the Prayer of Confession during worship, is important because we are a community of Christ's children - we are in this together, good and bad, and together we experience the transforming love of God through Jesus Christ.

Assurance of Pardon:
Hear the words of our creator,
spoken through the prophet Isaiah:
“I have called you by name.
You are mine. Do not fear,
for I have redeemed you.”
You are claimed by the God of love.
You are made new by the God of mercy.
You are restored by the God of justice.
Amen.

This Sunday we had the blessing of inviting RJ Lojek and Connor Walsh into the membership of our congregation as they declared their faith by God and Christ’s Church through their confirmation. RJ and Connor were each presented with their own copy of the NIV Starting Place Study Bible. As Pastor Heather said, the study Bible helps explains the confusing parts of Bible.

In addition, we presented the CEB (Common English Bible) Deep Blue Kids Bible, Ocean Surf Edition to our second grade Sunday School student. This interactive Bible includes four-color icons and illustrations throughout with a wealth of notes, historical facts, book introductions, devotionals, and other interactive elements to capture inquisitive young minds. The Deep Blue Kids Bible encourages a thirst for God’s timeless message and is meant for children ages 7 to 12.

We also recognized our high school Sunday School helper, Grace, for all that she brought this year to our Sunday School program.

Amy Frank shared with the group the well worn and much used dictionary that she had received from her grandparents as a high school graduation gift. As she shared with the three young people who received Bibles today, “I hope your Bibles don’t look new for long. I hope you carry them with you wherever you go. I hope that you use them. When I went to college, my grandparents gave me a dictionary and wrote it, 'Definite Help.' I hope that you find your Bibles will be like my dictionary, a ‘definite help’ to you in your life.”

All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. 2 Timothy:3:16-17

This Sunday, we will celebrate young faith by celebrating the confirmation of two of our teens, by presenting our second grade students with a Bible, and by gratefully acknowledging our Sunday School teachers and helpers. Jesus said, “Let the children come to me, and do not stop them, for it is too such as these that the kingdom of heaven belongs.” It’s part of following Jesus to encourage and nurture faith in our children. What about our own faith? Is our faith “grown-up” when we are grown-up?

Sometimes I think we decide that when we become adults, we’re done growing in our faith. I don’t think that’s true. In fact, when we think we’re done growing and learning in faith, I worry that what we really are is stuck. Faith is a journey that never ends. We never graduate from it, never receive a diploma to hang on the wall that pronounces our work in faith is done.

So as we celebrate our young folks standing up and professing their faith, and standing up to receive the Word of God, as we celebrate our dedicated teachers of that faith, I ask you to think about your own. Where are you with your faith? Are there areas in which you’d like to grow? Do you feel stuck? If you are, I invite you to come have a conversation with me.

Food for thought: What do you think “spiritual maturity” means?

The scriptures for this week are: Isaiah 43:1-7 and John 17:1-11.
