A Historic Milestone for Liberia: Rev. Dr. Jerry Kulah Elected Global Methodist Church Bishop for Africa-U.S. Episcopal Area

Johannesburg, South Africa: September 2, 2026- Rev. Dr. Jerry Kulah, a Liberian clergyman, has been elected Bishop of Episcopal Area 5 of the Global Methodist Church (GMC), a jurisdiction that spans Africa, Europe, and the United States. Episcopal Area 5 includes the Ethiopia Nazrawiyan, Great Lakes, Virginia, Southern Nigeria, Oasis, and the Grain Coast Annual Conference (Liberia).

Dr. Kulah secured an overwhelming 257 out of 316 votes during the election by the Assembly of Bishops, making him one of eight bishops elected for the first time in the history of the Global Methodist Church. His six-year tenure is set to begin in November 2026.

This election marks a significant elevation for Liberia within the newly established global denomination, positioning the Liberian congregation as a direct voice in the GMC's emerging leadership structure with responsibilities extending well beyond the country's borders.

The Global Methodist Church describes episcopal leadership as a sacred duty that goes beyond administrative authority—bishops are entrusted with shepherding the Church, guarding the faith, teaching, and upholding sound doctrine. In his new role, Bishop-elect Kulah will support clergy and congregations across the episcopal area, equip members for ministry, and advance the denomination's mission.

The Grain Coast Annual Conference, which includes Liberia, will be under his oversight alongside conferences and church communities in other parts of Africa and the United States.

GMC-Liberia has warmly welcomed the election, expressing confidence that Bishop-elect Kulah will approach his new responsibilities with humility, faithfulness, and shepherding love. The conference is convinced that he will uphold the denomination's commitment to spreading scriptural holiness throughout the region.

Bishop-elect Kulah and the other newly elected bishops are scheduled to be formally consecrated on September 5, 2026, in Johannesburg, South Africa.

🙏 Join us in praying for Nepal in the aftermath of flash flooding that led to devastating mudslides. We received word from our churches in the area–several churches have been damaged, and members or pastors are missing or tragically died. For Timure Church in Rasuwa, only the pastor survived.

The GMC disaster response team is actively working with churches in this area. Pray for the churches, families, missing people and the affected communities.
