“Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding.” — Proverbs 3:5

Tonight, standing at the fair with my wife and our daughter, I found myself thinking about a night there 21 years ago.

Tatum and I weren’t married yet. We went to the fair with my mom, and that became the last night we spent together with her.

Mom had been sick for a long time, and so much of that sickness had changed how she acted and how we experienced life together. But that night, she seemed like the mom I had grown up with. She was enjoying herself, and we were enjoying being with her. For that evening, it felt like we had her back—Mom, her son, and her soon-to-be daughter-in-law, sharing a good night together.

When Mom later passed away from an overdose, I couldn’t understand it. In the middle of that grief, I could never have pictured tonight.

Now, 21 years later, here I am at the fair with that same woman—my wife, with whom I’m celebrating 20 years of marriage—and our daughter, the granddaughter Mom never got to meet.

I wish Mom could have been here to see it.

There are things I still don’t understand. Trusting God doesn’t mean every painful question gets answered. But tonight reminded me that even when we cannot imagine what lies ahead, God can still bring love, joy, and beauty into our lives.

He has been faithful through the years, even through the ones I didn’t know how to face.

We may not see how everything will come together, but He sees beyond what we can see. We can lean on Him when our own understanding falls short.

God is good all the time. Tonight, I’m grateful for the memory of my mom, the family beside me, and the grace that has carried us here.
