Celebrate Dia de Mu***os with a community movie night! We will gather for a "surprise" animated movie (though you can probably guess). Everyone is invited, young and old, on Nov. 1 at 5:30 pm in the Sanctuary Courtyard (or the glass chapel next to it in case of rain). We are a diverse community from all backgrounds, ages, family structures, marital statuses, school grade levels and career stages, orientations, genders, and cultures. Whether you've celebrated Dia de Mu***os all your life or this is the first year you are learning about it, you are welcome to come hang out with us and share your stories.

Get excited for Mission Faire! This year the Missions Committee will be bringing back the gift card tree. We need your help by donating a gift card in any amount to any place you choose. Please bring it to church on Sunday or drop it by the office.

Then you will have a chance to win the entire tree full of gift cards by purchasing opportunity tickets. They will be available after worship on Sundays at the Missions table by cash or check:

- $2: 1 ticket
- $10: 6 tickets
- $20: 15 tickets

Here's what we're learning today at Redlands FUMC:

People come up to Jesus asking many questions about hot topics—political, social, financial, and moral.

Jesus says the two commandments to love God and love our neighbors as ourselves are the center of all the rest. Everything else finds its place in relation to all of that.

People do terrible things and call it love. Parents reject their children, churches say they are loving when the exclude the marginalized, and more. What is love? Sometimes love listens and sometimes love speaks from a boundary. Scriptures, tradition, and church family are used to love and heal and are used to hurt and hate. Sometimes we have cared more about self-preservation, winning, or being "good" than love.

Jesus doesn't say love others instead of yourself, but as yourself. If you know you are beloved, you don't have to prove yourself, erase yourself, or compare yourself to others. How we speak, act, and relate to each other are all part of this position of loving others out of knowing we are already loved.

We say we love others, but we must show it through actions, such as giving our resources, time, energy, financial support, and more. Stewardship of what we have been given means deciding what matters and how we will respond. Feeding people, grieving together, dreaming together, welcoming, nurturing disciples, rejecting fear and staying curious, committing to generosity.

We aren't just planning for our next ministry year, but also deciding how to vote in the midterm elections. How we make those decisions is a way of loving our neighbors. Ask those questions of those affected: parents of schoolchildren, LGBTQIA+ beloved neighbors, and more. What does love require of us? Maybe it's returning to that question that can guide our decisions, our fearfulness, and our hard struggles.

Centering ourselves in love of God, neighbors, and ourselves is a home to return to when we are faced with elections, budgets, and choices about how we live. We can trust that this center holds in any situation we face, guiding our decisions and relationships.

Love God, love your neighbor as yourself. Everything else hangs from there.

UWIF collects donations through two gift card programs: SCRIP and . Throughout the year, sales from these fund local missions like and scholarships for youth working on the annual regional mission. In addition, a portion of those funds raised are combined with other churches' contributions to support missions started by Methodist women's groups around the world. There are four such missions in our California-Pacific Conference alone: David and Margaret Youth and Family Services, Susannah Wesley Community Center, Toberman Neighborhood Center, and Calexico Neighborhood House.

Thanks to your support, we were able to exceed our 2026 goal for missions and confidently raised our 2027 goal, anticipating your continued support.

Through our partnership with Stater Brothers grocery stores, you get full value for SCRIP gift cards, just as you would any other. We are so excited to once again be part of our neighborhood trick or treat on Halloween afternoon and evening! While the City won't be sponsoring the event, they will be closing Olive Ave. from Cajon to Center. However, please (carefully!) cross Cajon at the light to visit our booth at 1 E. Olive Ave. In case of rain, we will be in the area inside the doors under the tent, so come in and get dry!

We will have parking, restrooms, water, small toys, and, of course, candy!

(Note: To better focus our efforts on our neighborhood, we will no longer have a booth at the airport event the Sunday before.)

We are also accepting donations of individually wrapped candy and small toys! Typically, we have around 3,000 kids stop by. If you don't live on Olive Ave and want to contribute, we are happy to accept donations on Sunday mornings or during business hours Monday-Friday.

Join us in the conference room after the worship service on Sunday for the last Wesleyan Seekers class of 2026! On Sunday, October 25, we'll watch and discuss Great Courses: Reading Biblical Literature, episode 17 on the prophets, individuals who advocated for social justice, their faith, and stood up to figures of authority. We will be asking, do they speak to us today? If so, how, and in what ways?

No class in November and December because of the holidays. We will resume in January (start date is tba).

Everyone is welcome, even if you have never attended a Wesleyan-Seekers class before or have not attended in a while. We are an inclusive group of seekers (hence the name) who are interested in expanding our knowledge and growing our faith in community. We strive to offer a safe and inclusive space to listen to one another, ask questions, and have great discussions.
