These are the verses Jesus applies to Himself in defining the anointing that is on Him and what it authorizes Him to do. Jesus also refers to these verses when John the Baptist questions whether Jesus is really the Messiah or not. When Jesus ascended into Heaven, He handed His ministry and, we believe, His anointing to carry out the work for which He was called, over to His disciples. We, as disci
ples of Jesus, have inherited this very same ministry and anointing through the Holy Spirit. Therefore, we have allowed this verse to define who we are and what we do. Here's the verse:
"The Spirit of the Lord is on Me, because He has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent Me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners And recovery of sight for the blind, to release the oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor." Luke 4:18-19
