Yesterday's block party was exactly what it was supposed to be — a fiesta with good food, real community, and resources for anyone who needs them. Thanks to everyone who came out.

Volunteer Spotlight ✨

Meet Shain Houchens. Shain has been serving the Good News Rescue Mission for 7 years — every Wednesday, rain, shine, or 120-degree summer heat, he and his partner Mike run the food donation route, picking up food from local businesses and delivering it to the Mission.

Ask him what volunteering has given him, and he'll tell you straight: it's given him a new outlook on the homeless community. "They're just people, struggling just like we are."

The weekly Wednesday route is a partnership — Shain and Mike trade off driving, lean on each other as sounding boards, and have turned a weekly shift into something they genuinely look forward to. They'll be the first to tell you it's about having fun and making the work enjoyable, not treating it like a job.

We're always looking for more volunteers like Shain — drivers and driver's assistants to keep the food coming in order to serve hundreds each day, six days a week. If you've ever thought about getting involved, this is your sign. 🚐 Link to sign up → https://gnrm.org/get-involved/volunteer/

Every Friday morning, our doors open and bags of groceries go home with anyone who needs them. No appointment needed. Just come by.

If you or someone you know could use some extra groceries, the Friday Food Give-Away starts at 8 AM and runs until the food is gone. 😊

We Need Kitchen Prep & Servers!

With 400-800 people walking through our doors daily, our kitchen runs with the help of the many volunteers who keep it moving. Our volunteers not only serve food, but also offer kindness, hope, and dignity. That smile matters.

Come be a part of the Mission family, where we see lives change every day. We need volunteers to help prep food and serve hot meals to our neighbors in need. We have shifts in the mornings, afternoons, evenings, and weekends — whatever fits your schedule. No experience needed, just willing hands and a heart for your community.

Volunteer Spotlight ✨

Meet Ruth Hendrickson. Ruth has been serving the Good News Rescue Mission for 30 years — what started with playing piano for an evening service has grown into three decades of showing up.

She's stepped into countless roles over the years, and these days you'll find her every Friday at Food Giveaway and in the Kitchen. But some of her most lasting memories aren't from behind a serving line — they're from the people. Like Billy, a 9-year-old she tutored at the Mission, who became like a grandchild to her and her late husband, and who once chased her down after a visit just to say "I forgot to give you a hug."

In 30 years, Ruth has watched people walk in with nothing and walk out with hope — from homelessness to building successful lives. That's what keeps her coming back.

Her advice if you're on the fence: "Just do it! You'll be around incredible people, make amazing friends, and watch broken lives be redeemed."

We Need Volunteers at our Distribution Center!

Behind every guest who walks out with a warm jacket or a fresh change of clothes is a volunteer who helped them find it. The Distribution Center is where dignity meets need — and we're looking for volunteers to fill afternoon shifts.

From sorting donations to stocking shelves to walking alongside guests as they pick out what they need, our volunteers keep this space running. If you have a few hours a week and a heart for your community, we'd love to have you on the team.
