The Lord's Table is about presence. The story of the road to Emmaus uniquely shows us this. Jesus reveals Scripture to them, but they don't recognize his presence until he breaks the bread with them at the table. They immediately tell others how God's presence showed them the truth! Is this our experience of Communion? Is this our response to the Lord's Table?

Luke 24:13-33

After warning the rich oppressors of the misery awaiting them, James calls on the oppressed believers to have patience because of the glory that awaits them. In patience, we wait. In perseverance, we don't lose hope. Patience and perseverance characterize a life of faith filled with prayer and a desire to show others the way. With faith, let your light shine!

James 5:7-20

Further exploring earthly "wisdom" James demands attention, saying: "Now, listen" and gives examples of how that wisdom falls short. The proud boast in their arrogant schemes and the rich oppressors hoard wealth that will rot. God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble. The wise choose to humble themselves before the Lord.

James 4-5:6

James begins chapter 3 addressing the believers who would like to become teachers and pants a vivid picture of the disorder and evil that can come from the tongue, a small but mighty force when not controlled. Disorder and evil are clear results of earthly "wisdom". True wisdom comes from our Heavenly Father above and seeks to bring peace.

James 3

James 1 ended with the idea that spiritual truth is put into practice. We follow God's Word and do what it says. In chapter 2, James challenges favoritism and how it contradicts the royal law: love your neighbor as yourself. We are to speak and act as those who will be judged, living with a faith that is seen in what we do. More than a mere acceptance of the truth, our faith produces action.

James 2

Understanding God’s character; understanding the effects of sin and rooting sin out of our lives as we follow after Jesus with perseverance all put us on the path to true wisdom, God’s wisdom. We have a map to wisdom in the Scriptures, the Word of truth, that we must not just listen to, but put into practice.

God sent Jesus to us who lived and breathed and experienced life like you and me. He went through the things we go through and felt the same emotions we do. If Jesus can be vulnerable with others, why can’t we?
