💚 June is National Safety Month & PTSD Awareness Month 🩵

June reminds us of two important things: safety matters, and not all wounds are visible.

Many people are carrying burdens we know nothing about. Some are living with PTSD. Some are walking through grief, trauma, anxiety, or difficult memories. Some are simply doing their best to make it through another day. We may not always see those struggles, but God does.

📖 "God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble." — Psalm 46:1

I love that this verse doesn't say God is our refuge only when life is easy. It reminds us that when life gets messy, painful, or overwhelming, God is right there with us.

National Safety Month also reminds us to look out for one another. Safety isn't just about seat belts, smoke detectors, and safe workplaces—though those things matter. It's also about creating spaces where people feel seen, heard, valued, and loved.

As followers of Christ, we have the opportunity to be part of that. Sometimes a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, or a simple "How can I pray for you?" can make a bigger difference than we realize.

🙏 Let us pray:

Gracious God, we lift up all those who are carrying wounds that others cannot see. We pray for those living with PTSD, trauma, anxiety, grief, and difficult memories. Wrap them in Your love and remind them that they are never alone. We pray for first responders, healthcare workers, military personnel, counselors, caregivers, and all who work to keep others safe each day. Help us to be mindful of the needs around us and willing to share Your compassion with others. Make our church, our homes, and our communities places where people can find hope, encouragement, and peace. Thank You for being our refuge and strength, especially on the difficult days. In Jesus' name, Amen. 🙏💚🩵🙏

This Sunday is going to be one of those joyful but bittersweet Sundays. 💜

We’re excited to celebrate Pastor Susan’s upcoming Ordination, but it will also be our final Combined 5th Sunday Service with Fisher UMC. These shared services have brought a lot of good memories, good fellowship, and a whole lot of laughter along the way.

So come worship with us, stay for the potluck, and help us celebrate Pastor Susan and this special season we’ve shared together. ✝️🎉

Midweek Reflection: Faith Was Never Meant to Stay in the Upper Room

This past Sunday was full in all the best ways. We were blessed to have two young musicians share their gifts with us during worship — Quinn and Ever Klavohn, piano students of our alternate organist, Jan Requa. Quinn shared his gift during our Special Music time, and Ever played during the offering. There’s something beautiful about watching young people step out and use their gifts in worship. It’s a reminder that God is always raising up new voices, new talents, and new ways to glorify Him.

Pastor Susan was away on a much-needed vacation, so I volunteered to serve as Liturgist Sunday morning. I’ll be honest… I was nervous. Very nervous. Somewhere between the opening words and the announcements, I apparently decided speed-running worship was a spiritual gift. 😅 I definitely spoke way too fast.

But despite the nerves, I truly felt blessed to do it.

Pastor Kevin has encouraged and inspired me from the beginning as I started down the Lay Servant Ministry path, and it meant a lot to me to be able to share that experience alongside him for my first time serving in that role.

And since I rapid-fired the announcements at everyone Sunday morning, I thought I’d slow them down a little here:

🔹 Tuesday night at 6:30 PM is Food Pantry Box Building for Saturday’s 9:00 AM distribution.

🔹 Sunday will be our final 5th Sunday Joint Worship with Fisher United Methodist Church at 10:00 AM, followed by a potluck celebration honoring Pastor Susan’s Ordination as a Deacon of Connectional Ministry in Full Connection.

🔹 Saturday, June 6th at 9:30 AM is the Ordination Service at the Peoria Civic Center. You are invited to attend in person or watch online. Due to remodeling construction at the Civic Center and Peoria permanently changing the traffic pattern near the Civic Center from a one-way street to a two-way street, please plan to arrive early and allow yourself a little extra time navigating the area.

🔹 Fran’s Friends will attend the Master Gardener’s Garden Walk on June 20th. Tickets are $10.00, and there is a sign-up sheet at the welcome desk.

🔹 Pastor Lisa Weidman hosts Open Road Ministry on Facebook Live Tuesday evenings at 6:30 PM. It’s a wonderful outreach ministry bringing Christ to people who may never feel comfortable walking into a traditional church building.

And honestly… that last announcement is the perfect segue into the heart of Pastor Kevin’s message.

Our scripture this week came from John 7:38-39:

“Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.”

Jesus never intended faith to be something we keep contained inside church walls.

He didn’t tell the disciples to stay put, build buildings, and wait for people to come hear stories about Him. He sent them out into the world to live the Gospel among the people.

When the Holy Spirit came upon the 120 gathered in the upper room — with rushing wind and tongues of fire — they didn’t stay there hiding behind closed doors waiting for curious people to wander in and investigate the noise. They went out into the streets. They shared the message boldly and publicly with their community.

Somewhere along the way, though, many of us have unintentionally reduced worship to one hour on Sunday mornings inside a building we call our church home. And for countless others, worship happens alone within the quiet walls of their homes.

But faith was never meant to be passive.

God’s love for us certainly wasn’t passive.

He loved us enough to send Jesus to live among us, teach us, walk beside us, suffer for us, and ultimately die for us so that our sins could be washed away.

There is nothing quiet or passive about that kind of love.

That is loud. That is bold. That is action.

So maybe the question we should ask ourselves this week is this:

If the disciples were willing to leave the safety of the upper room to carry the Gospel into the streets… are we willing to carry the love of Christ beyond the sanctuary walls?

Not just through words. But through actions. Through kindness. Through compassion. Through service. Through encouragement. Through simply showing up for people who need to know they are not alone.

Because sometimes the loudest sermon we preach is the way we love others.

📣Call to Action

📖 Read John 7:38-39 again this week and reflect on what “living water” flowing from within us might look like in everyday life.

💙 Look for one intentional way to show the love of Christ through action this week — not because you have to, but because faith naturally overflows outward.

🙏 Pray for courage to move beyond passive faith and into active discipleship.

🏡 Remember that the Church is not just the building we gather in on Sunday mornings — it is the people carrying Christ into the community every day.

🙏Let’s Pray 🙏

Gracious and loving God, thank You for the gift of worship, fellowship, and the many ways You continue to work through Your people. Thank You for the gifts shared during worship this week, especially through Quinn and Ever as they used their musical talents to glorify You. Thank You also for those willing to step outside their comfort zones to serve, and for the encouragement we receive from one another along the journey of faith. Lord, help us not to keep our faith contained within sanctuary walls, but to carry Your love boldly into our homes, workplaces, neighborhoods, and communities. Fill us with the fire of Your Holy Spirit so that compassion, kindness, mercy, and grace flow from us like living water. Give us courage to live our faith actively and intentionally, reflecting Christ not only through our words, but through our actions. May others see Your love through the way we serve and care for one another. In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.

🙏💜🙏

Midweek Reflection: More Than Sunday Morning Faith

There was a brief moment on Sunday when some of us may have wondered if Pastor Susan knew something the rest of us didn’t… because suddenly we were singing Hark! The Herald Angels Sing in May. 😂

To be fair, there was actually a very meaningful reason behind it. Hark! The Herald Angels Sing was written by Charles Wesley, one of the founders of the Methodist movement alongside his brother John Wesley. Charles was incredibly prolific, writing over 6,000 hymns during his lifetime. (Honestly, most of us struggle to finish a grocery list some days.) He primarily wrote the lyrics, while others later paired them with music — and occasionally even changed the tune or wording without his permission. I have a feeling Charles may have had some thoughts about that.

In our United Methodist Hymnal, there are 51 hymns written by Charles Wesley. Historically, hymn #1 has been O For a Thousand Tongues to Sing, another reminder of the deep roots of our faith tradition and the passion behind it.

As I’ve reflected on that heritage this week, one thing keeps standing out to me: Methodism has never been intended to be a passive faith. From the very beginning, it has been active, hands-on, and lived out in everyday life.

Our faith heritage is filled with ordinary people using their gifts, talents, skills, and compassion to care for others. Some sew blankets, dresses, or hygiene items that will be shared around the world. Some cook meals or quietly deliver groceries to neighbors in need. Others help repair a porch, mow a lawn, change a lightbulb, or fix a leaky faucet for someone who simply can’t do it alone anymore. Some sit beside a grieving friend, visit someone who is lonely, or accompany a person to a difficult medical appointment because nobody should have to walk through scary moments alone.

None of those things may look flashy or impressive by the world’s standards, but they are deeply holy acts of active faith.

Sometimes we unintentionally begin to think of faith as something that only happens inside the church building on Sunday mornings. But the truth is, worship is meant to send us back out into the world carrying the love of Christ with us. Faith was never meant to sit quietly on a shelf between Sundays. It was always meant to move.

So maybe the question this week is this:

How can we actively demonstrate our Methodist roots — not only in the church, but in our community and throughout the world?

📣Call to Action

✨ Look for one practical way to serve someone this week.

✨ Use one of your gifts or talents to encourage another person.

✨ Reach out to someone who may be lonely, overwhelmed, or struggling.

✨ Remember that even small acts of kindness can become powerful witnesses of faith.

🙏 Let’s Pray 🙏

Gracious God, thank You for the rich heritage of faith that has been passed down through generations. Thank You for the people who taught us that faith is not simply something we believe, but something we live. Help us to use the gifts, talents, compassion, and abilities You have given each of us to serve others with love and humility. Open our eyes to the needs around us and remind us that even the smallest acts of kindness can reflect Your light in the world. May our faith remain active, generous, and deeply rooted in Christ. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
